Htc 459-356 slick sided vs ranch dog 460-350 45-70
« on: February 17, 2018, 09:22:32 PM »
Decided to test out which one was better.

Shot both w same load I use for my ranch dog 42.5 gr imr4198 and wolf primer. Both powdercoated, both plain based, both 50-50 alloy (wheel weight/range scrap). Shot at 50 yards

Open sights  htc shot 1.80 inch 5 shot
Open sights  ranch dog shot 1.90 inch 5 shot

Ranch dog shot point of aim and the htc shot around 1 inch high but same windage.

I just did some initial shooting with mine loading the HTC bullet (came out to 360 grs.) with the same load (22 grs. 2400) as the 350.  Shooting them out of my 1895 SBL in 45-70 with the Leupold Scout scope on it at 100 yds I got a few amazing groups with the HTC bullet, like almost all 3 shots touching compared tot he normal 1.5-3 in. groups I get with the 350 RD. I have more testing to do but I bought the HTC to shoot in my .458 SOCOM and it look like I will be shooing it in my 45-70 also if they continue to shoot as well as they have.

This was with both of them being Hi Tek coated, trying out powder coating them now and will test also to see which one works best.

I’d have to guess around 1700 fps w the 18.5 inch barrel

Your not kidding. They cast much easier than the ranch dog so I’m thinking practice 45-70 bullet. I’ll save the ranch dogs for hunting and fall/winter practice and use the htc for targets

I'd think that the HTC bullet would fly a little better at distance too.  I believe it has a higher BC.

I’ll try it at 80-100 yards later and speak on it

Gas check or PB?

This was with a gas check since I got it specifically for shooting faster out of my AR15 in .458 SOCOM.  I usually go with a GC when possible, especially with a lighter bullet unless I know it will be used as more of a plinker out of my lever gun.

I like this bullet quite a bit. I cannot wait for the lighter version of this bullet
