I am looking for a gas checked cast bullet to shoot solely in a M1 Garand at paper, 100 to 200 yards. I have searched CastBoolits, CMP Forum, Garand Forum, AR15 and many others. Mosts suggest the 311299 (202 gr.), but I like the looks of the 311365 (198) and the soon to be 311414 (148 gr.). My favorite is the latter (311414), four bullets for the price of three. Yes, accuracy counts way more then looks. The problem of the 311414 is that most of the data is in the 190 to 200+ weight range for the M1. I think the reason for the heaver bullets is that their easy to get a load to work the action well, because of the lower velocities required by cast bullets, although reading suggests velocities of 2200 to 2400 can be obtain with hard cast, water cooled, gas checked bullets which is not that far from Ball 2 ammo. There seems to have been some success with 150 grain bullets of the Loverin design (does anyone make them any more?) in those velocity ranges. All thoughts are greatly appreciated, and would love to hear from any Garand shooter using cast bullets as to their favorite bullet and load.

I started out using the 311299 in my Garand, and they shot just fine, but then I picked up my NOE 311365 and thats all I use now. Shoots VERY well out of both my Garand and my Finn Mosin. Certainly raised some eyebrows when I started knocking over 500 yard rams with them.
One thing I do have to do to ensure long range accuracy with these is chuck each and every one in a cordless drill and spin it to check for wobble. If you drop it a little too soon, that long skinny point is soft enough to bend. I usually find 1 or 2 out of 100 that have a wobbly nose, even though they are water dropped into a deep bucket with a towel on the bottom.Dean; I eagerly wait your results. Baja; That’s what I wanted to hear. Love the looks of that bullet. Thinking about in GC, Hard Cast, Water Dropped, And either H or IMR 4895. What do you think. And by the way thanks for the tip.

Got an Italian .308 Garand.
I’ve used Lyman 160gn 311 bullets single-loaded with The Load (16gn N110) with great results.
Also got it running with 32gn N140 with Lyman 314299’s sized to 311 (mine measures .310 on the groove and .301 on the lands, so the 311299 might not fit on the nose – the 160’s certainly don’t, but shoot great anyway) – this runs at about 1960fps.
