I see the Lyman 358156 gas-checked Thompson design mentioned quite frequently by “folks who know” as a solid performer and a design they wouldn’t want to be without. Accuracy is one of its strong points. I have a 2 cavity lyman, but the base is quite oversized, making gas check installation a multi-step process. Despite that, I cast and load it frequently, and provide it to friends who ask for it. I would really like a multi-cavity version with a correct gas check shank, and I suspect there are a bunch of people out there who would like that, as well as the option of plain base and hollow point.
I don’t think Al has ever made this design, and I haven’t seen it anywhere except from Lyman. Is this a design that people would buy? If so, please post.

I’ll pull some of mine out and see if that is the case. The crimp groove length, etc. should be comparable. Al did respond to my query and suggested that someone would provide some bullet samples he would be fine with running it. Perhaps this one slipped his mind or maybe it isn’t a direct copy. Have you compared the two designs in hand?
You are correct, sir. The NOE 360 160 SWC is indeed not an exact copy of the 358156. From the original Cast Boolits group buy: “…started out as a copy of Lyman’s 358156 and was changed to have a larger lube groove and a slightly longer top crimp groove to nose length.”

For posterity, the measurements on my .358156 Lyman is the following (NOE 460 -160 in parentheses): casts .360 with coww, overall length is .670 (.700), length from base to front of grease groove .285 (.305), length from front of grease groove to nose is .385 (.395), length from front of top crimp groove to nose is .300 (.300), and meplat is .240 (.240). So basically the larger grease groove lengthened the bullet, but meplat and nose length stayed the same. These measurements are to the nearest .005 with an analog caliper.
Anybody think thsee differences are a big deal? Does lengthening the bullet help or hurt?

I think the reality is that since Swede already has the means to produce the NOE re-design at his disposal, and he can replenish inventory at the same time, it would make the most sense for him to do that one. I am fine with that course of action and it looks like there are already three of us willing to buy one. Maybe that is enough to move it over to the group buy section.
