Been busy placing gas checks on my three 30 caliber short necked bullets but needed a break. Now that I have a 300 Sav specific bullet I wanted to address a cartridge feed issue I’ve had with my Savage 110. This rifle is a pre-“new” Savage but of late manufacture by the “old” Savage, I’ve not seen another like it. Despite it’s chambering, it is the 110 long action. The rifle was supposedly not used but the headspacing/barrel had been adjust slightly long of the SAAMI spec which was corrected with go/no go gauges. My guess is that it was adjusted to use the longer spitzer bullets of 165 to 180 grains. I’ve only been able to use the rifle as a single shot no matter what bullet or cartridge overall length I used, it would not feed. The cartridge would come out of the magazine too far off center. I’ve never bought 300 Sav factory ammo.

So today, as a break, I decided to look at the innards to see what needed adjusting. What is happening is that the cartridge has too long a run along the magazines cartridge guides which are obviously intended for a long action cartridge. When the cartridge was finally free of the guides it was too far off center to hit the chamber.

I simply marked the guides with a pencil at the point that the nose of the cartridge was centered and then filed the guides slightly. Loaded it up with dummy cartridges and gave it a try. Greased lightning now!

I found the rifle on Gunbroker at a low price with no bidders. To top it off, it was a local seller who I contacted to see if he would do a face to face which he did. The rifle had hang tags on it so the off SAAMI spec chamber adjustment is a bit confusing. I don’t think Savage ever offered any 300 Sav barrel. The fellow that I bought it from had bought it at a gunshop several years prior and had not shot it. The rifle has some of the best wood I’ve seen on a rifle and the bluing is very deep. I did install a Basix trigger to get away from the old style non-adjustable Savage trigger.

Guess it is time to get back to the checks, the 110 needs some bullets!

Very nice rifle, chambering is a bit odd but I like it. Glad you got the feeding issue ironed out. Haven’t cast any with my new RD 300 Savage mould but hope to do so soon. Hope Swede gets some GC’s in, I’ll be running low by the time I get a load worked up for my 99.
Wonder if someone swapped the barrel in your 110?

After lubing bullets this morning, I decided to spend some time doing whatever was necessary to figure out exactly what model of 110 this rifle is. Took a little digging but finally figured it out. It is a 110WLE built in 1992. Here is the “Gun Buyer’s Guide” info:

          110WLE_info.jpg

I’m pretty sure now that it was set with a “deep throat” by the factory as various forum comments I found concerning the 7×57, 250 Sav, & 300 Sav chamberings indicated that they were all long to accommodate long cartridge lengths; something that the short actions and SAAMI specs did not allow. The comments also reflect what I offered about the wood and bluing.

I possibly figured out what to do with the 110WLE in the short term. If Savage built this rifle to fill the needs of those wanting to use their 300 Sav components to create something more like a 308 Win, well… just do that. I switched from the 310-165 to the 310-180 and gave it a try.

I realize that this is at 25-yards but start all my shooting at this distance because if the bullet holes don’t touch here, they are not going to produce a useable MOA for hunting out at 150 and 200 yards. The first shot was the hole that is low, might be able to read the note to self! Before any more shootin, I must adjust the Basix trigger.

The longer features of the 310-180’s nose does a great job of filling the longer throat of this 300 Savage. This is also my first run with the  Ben’s TL formula lube; a mix of Liquid Alox (60%) and Johnson’s One Step Wax (40%).

A couple of shots does not a load make but based on my experience, the 310-180 offers great hope for this long throated 300 Sav.  As you can read from the notes on the target, this is not plinking load but a full blown hunting load. I’m actually going to bump the charge a bit to see if that tightens things up. My experience with the tumble lube bullets is that the harder they are pushed, up to the limit of the alloy, the better they shoot. My alloy mix is 95/5, wheel weights/tin. I do add 1 ounce by volume of #8 shot to 10# of the alloy mix and water quench at the drop. This makes for a very tough alloy that has proven to me to be an outstanding hunting bullet.

Hope to get up the hill to my range today but we have had an unprecedented amount of heavy thunderstorms this past week, near a third of our annual rainfall in five days, so the rain runoff coming across that rise is unbelievable. I did wander up to my shooting range two evenings ago to see what it looked like, there was about 3″ to 4″ of water running across it. Out at the 200 yard berm there was a big boar hog snooting around in the water, I would put it at 200# field dressed. Sure wish I had the 110WLE ready right then! Could have even shot off the bench!

RD, What’s your first impression on using Ben’s Liquid Lube? I know you just started using it and time will tell but so far how’s it holding up to pressures and velocities? Is it easier compared to dipping?

It is working as well as dipping. I’m shooting it up through 2400 FPS with pressures of 42.0 – 43.0K PSI.

RD if you were picking one tl bullet for .308 win., would it be the tcl310180 or the tcl311165 ?
This would be for a mauser action….the 180 looks like slick feeding to me.

Btw what dia. did the 310180 drop at with your alloy?

The TLC310-180-RF, this is the cartridge it was designed for. The TLC310-165-RF is a bullet for the 300 Savage.

I cast with 95% wheel weights/5% tin, with the gas check the bullets weighed 179-grains.

Are you using any heat in the lubing process, either heating the lube or the bullets?

Thanks for the info on the 180. As to the 165 gr. i was refering to the 311 not the 310. I do like the looks of the 180 and may give it a try…thanks again!!
