Anyone else want a multi-cavity clone of the Lyman 452374 Devastator 180gr HP mould for 45 ACP? The Lyman 452374 single cavity mould casts a 180gr hollow point bullet. There isn’t anything in this weight offered by NOE now. See: http://www.lymanproducts.com/lyman/bullet-casting/mould-details.php?entryID=30

The closest similar mould offered by NOE now is the NOE 454-230-PB (H&G 34) but it casts a 213gr HP.

If you haven’t read Glen Fryxell’s book, “From Ingot to Target, A Cast Bullet Guide for Handgunners” (available free on the LASC website), Chapter 13, “Casting Hollow Pointed Bullets”, is a wealth of information on HP cast bullets. See:  http://www.lasc.us/Fryxell_Book_Chapter_13_CastingHPBullets.htm

In Chapter 13, Glen discusses the Lyman #452374 Devastator 180gr HP bullet too.

He stated: “When launched with 7.5 grains of Unique they deliver right at 1100 fps, and very good accuracy from a full-sized Kimber 1911. This bullet feeds quite nicely too.”

He also said: “It expands easily and cycles smoothly in 1911’s.”

He continued:  the Lyman #452374 HP was not only good for small game and predator hunting, but also that it’s great for “…defensive and law enforcement applications…”

There’s a lot more there too. Check it out.

Does anyone have a sample of the Lyman #452374 180gr HP Devastator bullet that they could send to Al to use to get the dimensions for the mould. If any of you could send Al a few samples, I’d be happy to send you some money by check, money order, whatever, to cover your expenses and postage, etc. Send me a PM, and I’ll send it out to you ASAP.

Also, the Lyman #452374 180gr Devastator HP mould is basically a round nose/flat point design, with the one removable hollow point pin. As such, it isn’t the same as the standard Lyman 452374 round nose bullet mould, which casts a nominal 225gr round nose bullet.

It appears that if the NOE version of the 180gr Devastator mould had flat point pins, it would cast a round nose/flat point bullet that weighs somewhere in the 215gr to 220gr weight range. That should make the NOE version much more versatile than the original Lyman too. How does that sound to you?

                  Bones,

Thank you for posting that drawing. I wasn’t familiar with that one. I thought I knew about all of the designs Al could offer, but I didn’t see that one listed in either the “On-Line Store” or the “NOE Bullet Drawings” section. Where did you find the drawing? That one you showed would work for me though.

One of the members on the CastBoolits Forum is going to send Al some samples of the Lyman #452374 180gr Devastator bullets. I would be willing to go with either the one you posted, or a Lyman devastator clone, whatever the majority of the people would want to have.

What would the rest of you like to do?

                      DR Owl Creek,

I got those pics from a group buy over on cast boolits, IIRC, circa 2011. I would assume that Al has a drawing of it somewhere, but don’t know for certain. You could ask Al…

The drawing for the NOE 186gr RG/HP bullet you posted looks similar to the Lyman 180gr Devastator bullet. To me, it looks like the biggest differences would be that the NOE 186gr RG/HP bullet has a squared off lube groove, while the Lyman 180gr Devastator HP has a rounded lube groove configuration. How has the NOE 186gr HP bullet worked out for you?

I sent Al a PM asking if he still has the tooling to run the NOE 186gr RG/HP. Perhaps he’ll come back with an answer here. I would be satisfied with either the NOE 186gr HP, or the Lyman 180gr Devastator clone. I would go along with whatever the rest of the buyers preferred.

                          DR Owl Creek,

The bullet has worked well for me, but I learned early on that too hard of an alloy wasn’t the thing for expansion. I generally use a 50/50 mix of Clip on wheel weights and pure lead with a touch of tin to help fill out.

I heard back from Al. He does still have the tooling to run the NOE 453 186gr FN-PB RG/HP. To me, the existing NOE 453 design looks very similar to the Lyman 180g Devastator, except the NOE design has a squared off lube groove, while the Lyman Devastator has a more rounded lube groove. I can’t comment on the size of the meplat, however, because I don’t have the dimensions for the Lyman bullet. Al said he would start an interest thread for a rerun of the NOE 453 186gr FP/HP as soon as he gets the time.

Here are the drawings for the NOE 186gr FP-PB RG/HP bullet:

Sounds like You’ve got good news on the tooling and drawings, and since Al doesn’t have to wait for tooling, He should be able to do a run of molds provided it gets enough interest. I will keep an eye on this thread to see how it turns out.

Since we actually have two different bullet designs under discussion here in this thread now, I thought it might make more sense to start a separate interest thread for doing an Inventory Rerun of the NOE 453 186gr HP. That way we can keep this thread going for a new run of the Lyman Devastator 180gr HP for those who want it, and still have a separate thread for a rerun of the existing NOE 453 186gr HP/215gr FP.

Here’s a link to the NOE 453 186gr HP/215gr FP Inventory Rerun Interest Thread, for those who would like this design:  http://noebulletmolds.com/smf/index.php/topic,823.0.html

You could post on either, or both, of these threads too if you want!  ;D

                                  Thanks,

For any 45 ACP shooters  who are concerned about conserving the amount of lead you are using, either of these bullet designs would be a great choice. If you compare the number of 180gr cast bullets you could get from a 20 lb pot of lead, you would get about 170 more of the 180gr bullets than you would with 230gr cast bullets from each pot. That amount would make a big difference for people who shoot a lot.
