Nose sizing (NOE Kit)

      I got the push through sizing kit from NOE for a couple of reasons. One of them was to try nose only sizing. I powder coat most of my bullets, and sometimes that makes the nose too large for reliable feeding. While using it, I made some observations. I’m not sure if I’m doing everything right, so if anyone has any suggestions to improve the process let me know.

      When you push the nose of the bullet into the die, it leaves kind of a flange after you push it back out. I’m not sure if this is supposed to happen or not. Am I just supposed to scrape it off with my fingernail each time?

      The other problem/question I had is making the nose sizing repeatable. I guess you’re just supposed to push until a certain resistance is felt. I uploaded the picture below to show how highly variable it can be. Note the difference in the sized portion between bullet 3 and bullet 4 for contrast.

      So I just thought I’d open this method up for discussion. There seems to be a lot of curiosity on NOE’s kit from those that don’t have them, and maybe some other people have ideas or questions.

      P.S.  Yes, I posted this over on the CB forum.  People over there seem interested in anything having to do with NOE’s sizing kit, but I’m more likely to find people who have used it a lot here I think.

        I haven’t used the NOE sizer, since the sizes I’m most interested in aren’t offered.

        I have, however, done some nose-sizing with Lee dies.

        To make the process repeatable, I used a stack of washers for one particularly long bore-rider.
        The washers rode on the press ram with a Lee bottom punch (“bullet pusher” according to Lee), and contacted the sizing die to stop sizing.

        For another bullet, I used a chunk of steel as a stop block.  I had to hold it in place by hand, but it wasn’t a big deal, since nose-sizing requires extra steps anyway.  One side of the block contacted the press ram.  The other hit the sizing die mouth.
        Stupid simple, but very effective.

        Everything else has had enough of a ‘step’ between the nose and body (bore-riders, mainly), that the bullet itself would stop forward progress, as long as I wasn’t throwing my weight on the press handle.

        As for the ring of lead…
        All of my dies have enough of a taper that they don’t scrape lead like that.  They just squeeze the nose.
        If my die/bushing was doing that, I’d probably see about putting a bit of a radius or fillet on the mouth.

          The washer thing is a good idea Squigie.  I guess I’d have to use the “bullet pusher” for a larger caliber so it’s got something to grab onto, but that shouldn’t be an issue.  I have several of those from the Lee sets, and I think they work just fine with the NOE sizer.

          The other thing I might be able to do is cut the body off a piece of brass (327 Federal Magnum?), slip fit it around the thirty caliber bottom punch. and use that as a stop point that I trim to my liking.

            I think I need a slight chamfer/bevel in the nose bushing to prevent the scraping on most of the bullets I am trying to nose size.
