Along with this mold I will also need to get all the tools I need for casting. I am going to list my shopping list and can you guys please let me know if I’ll need anything else?

      1. RG4 Cavity Mold
      2. Mold Handles
      3. Lee Precision Melter
      4. Sprue plate lube
      5. RG4 Blank Pin Set
      6. Set of top punches
      7. Wrenches
      8. Digital Mold Thermometer
      9. Lead pot thermometer

I will need lead. I am going to start with a mix of wheel weight ingots and pure lead at 50/50 and see if it needs more tin or more lead from there.

Is there anything else I will need to start casting or does that cover it? Can someone explain the top punches and RG blank pin sets,  the difference and what they are for? I’m new to this and just diving right in so I can get quality hunting slugs for my gun.

      Thanks for everything,  everyone.

RG blank pin set:  You can make  Your pins any shape You want, example like octagon, smaller hole etc..Top punches has something to do with “real gun” reloading that’s not my thing so won’t able to help for that issue.

What I noticed  You need thick gloves for casting and wooden mallet for opening that sprue plate.Or you can open that sprue plate with Your hand. I use my hand to open sprue plate so that’s why I recommend those gloves .

If that Lee’s pan isn’t that pro 4-20 pan which has spout under pan You need ladle for pouring lead to mold

          Good Morning,
Just a quick response as I’m sure others will chime in with additional details.  The top punches are used with a bullet lube sizing press such as the Lyman, RCBS or SAECO offerings.  This is the part that fits the shape of the nose of your bullet so its not deformed during the Lubricating and sizing process.  To use the top punches, you will also need the appropriate lube sizing die and lube sizer press (i.e. Lyman 45, 450, 4500,  RCBS Lube a matic, SAECO etc).  Here are a few from midway: http://www.midwayusa.com/bullet-sizers-and-heaters/br?cid=8666

You can also do without these and lube by hand, pan lube or tumble lube as many do with good success.  You only need the top punches if you are using one of the appropriate lube sizers.

As for the blank sets of pins, you will only need these if you want to custom make you own pins.  Most if not all of the RG style molds come with a set already made up for cast HP, flat nose, and cupped point bullets.  My recommendation is to buy the cast handloading manual such as the LYMAN CAST Bullet Handbook like this one:  http://www.midwayusa.com/product/867465/lyman-cast-bullet-handbook-4th-edition-book

          Hope that helps a little…

I would also throw a cheap single burner hotplate on your list to be used to preheat your molds.  I think you can get them from amazon for under $20.  Ditto on the Lyman cast handbook as well as the thick leather gloves (I like the harbor freight welder gloves).  You’ll also need something to use as flux–candle wax/saw dust works fine.  I’ve even used old bday cake candles and broken crayons before.  Tea light candles are cheap.  Also, if you don’t want to size your bullets with a Lubrisizer, you can use the push through sizing dies from lee or NOE.

I know my eyes are getting old but I didn’t see any reference to the op saying anything about  air gun hunting.  I only see the question “What do I need”….I’m not saying its not there, I just dont see it.

However, I was wondering what he was using and what was he going to hunt when he said he wanted to get quality hunting slugs for his gun.

If he’ll chime in with more specifics on his exact needs, I’m sure we can get him steered in the right direction.  There are so many considerations not mentioned yet such as lubes, sizing, designs that will fit his need.  I still say its best to start with a few good books on the subject and that the Lyman 4th edition is a good place to start. Also the articles on the LASC website are great too!  Here’s a good book on PDF that a good reference.

                good luck!

Well anyways check who is number 4 on list and that is a Airgun mold and I didn’t find He’s name any other Group Buy list…And I recognise that same user name from Airgun forum..So i’m pretty sure He is Airgunner. I could be wrong so when He is around we get correct information..

I think you might have something there. Now, some of the terminology used is all starting to make sense…yep, now I’m sure you are right.
