Participant::This is a fun bullet–I got one last time around. Those points sure are pointy.
I bet it is. Ever since I purchased my 500, I’ve wanted to try the spire point for mine. One of the main reasons I decided to finally cave in and start casting. I’ve been reloading for some 20 years, but never made my own boolits. I’m hoping this mold comes around again. Love to have a nice mold for it.

::I settled on 29 grains H110/296 for around 1375fps In a 7 1/2 inch bbl.
29 grains IMR 4227 was also nice, if a little more smoky. 1259 ish if I recall correct.After powder coating, I was almost at 400 grains.
Ranch Dog has the QL data in his posting on this forum. It’s a good launch pad for developing your own preference.Oh. Those points are indeed sharp enough to penetrate skin if you’re not paying attention. Quite a pointed lesson.

Full.Lead.TacoKeymaster::I have a few different loads for mine. I am running powder coated with gas checks with around 29 gr AA#9 (stout), 15 gr Unique for lighter, full case of Trailboss for light, and a few near max loads with H110& 4227 that I will not post–very potent. If you want max velocity I would use H110 and work up.

Participant::Thank you both for the information. I’ve been researching for a while and getting ready to purchase a few powders to try. Once I find some trail boss, I’m going to for sure get alittle of that so maybe my girl will want to shoot this wheel gun more.
I was looking at the accurate 1680 and 5744. I was liking the lower pressures as to not beat the gun up so bad but still have decent velocities. However, I’ve read more than once that some folks are having hard ignition with the 5744. I do not want to use magnum primers. So I’m still trying to find the happy medium for my situation. I’ve considered h110 also and have seen load data for imr-4227.
I’m not looking for top velocities, just a nice range load in a few different bullet weights and a few hotter loads for hunting. I do not need anything beyond 1500 fps, and extreme temps are not an issue for me when shooting. My 500 is the 6.5 inch half lug.2016-05-24 at 14:01 #503995
Full.Lead.TacoKeymaster::I do a fair amount of loading with 5744 in several calibers. Unburnt/partially burnt powder left in the barrel is normal with 5744–it doesn’t hurt anything, its just a “dirty” powder. I like it even though some people hate it because of the burnt powder flakes left in the bore. It cleans up just fine. Keep in mind that per pound, 5744 is more expensive, but usually requires less powder thereby saving money or canceling out the price difference (ie: 45-70 loads, etc…).

I really appreciate your experiences sir. Thank you for taking the time. Helps a lot when I’m tying to find what’s best for my needs. You said full case of trail boss, so I’m assuming your also using large rifle primers for those loads? I’ve read that some use the large magnum rifle primers for the lighter “unique” and ” trail boss” reduced loads.
I do have a fair amount of unique/true blue/silohuette for my other handgun loads. I also was considering some enforcer, since I’ve used western powders for awhile and really liked them. Just too many choices I guess.
Another question, if you do not mind, what alloy hardness were you using?2016-05-24 at 15:36 #503997
Full.Lead.TacoKeymaster::I just use normal large rifle primers, not magnum for all my 500 mag loads. When I say “full case of Trailboss” I mean “fill the case up to the base of the bullet” but don’t compress the powder at all. As far as alloy hardness goes–when I do light loads I use softer alloys and when I do near max loads I cast them a bit harder. I powder coat all of them to avoid using lube. These bullets are obviously designed for penetration instead of expansion, so a little harder alloy helps them penetrate a bit more without deforming.

I’ve read about powder coating and I like it. The end project comes out beautiful. I’m a bee keeper and I have lots of bees wax, so using the resources I have on my farm, even for lube, helps things run more smoothly. spending less, makes for a happy home and girlfriend,lol.
