I just received a 4 cavity mould that was drilled for a probe. It is located on the same end  as the sprue plate pivot pin. This puts the probe wiring under the handles and out of the way while pouring hot lead.  For most casters this is in the correct location. But for me I would prefer it on the opposite end. I attach the mould handles so the sprue plate opens away from me. This keeps the hot plate from swinging the whole way around burning my left thumb or back of my hand. After years of casting it seemed odd to do it this way but in a very short time in proved to be the correct way for me. I know, I know, I should wear a heavier glove to prevent burns. Working unrestricted is just my style and I will be the one to pay the price for not wearing all the protective gear that’s available.

Just was curious to know how many who use a mould temp.probe put the mould handles on backward like I do and what is your opinion about location of drill hole for probe.

Heap big dangerous,  762Sultan. Recommend this as a bare minimum :

        Keep um face pretty.

I’ve had two occasions where I had a nice splatter of lead attach itself to my face mask. I also wear a full leather apron from the neck, covering the arms, to just below my knees. And deerskin gloves. They help with the fine control of the various aspects of casting.

Getting back on topic, I think the probe receptacle seems fine where it is, IMHO.

The only protection I wear is eye protection other than non synthetic clothing.

I don’t use gloves as i cannot work with them absolutely no feel or grip for me with gloves.

I also open the sprue plate away from me and use a temp probe, no problems that I have encountered.

            Dromia,
In my original post I forgot to say that the only moulds that I put on the handles backwards are 4 cavity ones. The 2 cavity are put on as normal. I have not casted with the new 4 cav. I just got today and was just wondering how awkward it would be with the probe and wires on the front. But if it works for you I’m sure it will work for me. Thanks.

I too am swinging the sprue plate away from me, and I have felt the position of the probe to be a little awkward. I was thinking about drilling a new hole in the opposite end.

If I’m not mistaken, you can turn the sprue plate end for end.

                  Interesting… That’s a great feature, I’ll have to look into that  :)

I  looked at a mould this morning before work and it certainly looks like you can do that.

So I was going to switch direction on the sprue plate on all the molds… but then I decided that the location on the front of the mold for the probe was best when using the hot plate – it’s easier to get it out of the way (despite it being more in the way when pouring)… so now they’re there unchanged  ;D

Yes it certainly does look like this will work! I only have one 4 cavity that is drilled for the probe so this morning I switched the sprue plate end for end and it looks correct. I currently don’t “need” any of this bullet but it looks like I will be making some of these this afternoon.

I made about 10 pounds of bullets using the sprue plate reversed so I could install the temp probe from the back of the mould. This worked perfectly. How come some of the most perplexing problems have such a common sense answer? It should have been a no brainer! I guess sometimes we look for a complex answer to a simple problem. At least I don’t have to drill 5 or 6 moulds with a new hole. You can bet that all the new moulds I buy will be drilled for a probe.
