I just ordered a CVA HUNTER 45-70 25IN any suggestions on a bullet mould for it?

I am just going to target shoot with it for now. I got some brass for the 45-70 a while ago and I just wanted to cast and handload for it so I found a new single shot rifle for less than 300$ so I jumped on it. I purchased 2 boxes of ammo (I will now have 50 pieces of brass after I shoot it up).

I am kind of leaning towards a 450 grain or 500 grain bullet (I have data for then in my Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook but the 450 is a Lee mould and the 500 is a Lyman but I would rather just start with a NOE mould.

Thanks for any help you send my way.

Congrats on the purchase!  My friend recently bought the same rifle and we have been doing a bunch of casting and loading for it as well as my 45-70’s.  The big round nose 535 gr bullet designed for the sharps type of rifles didn’t do so well in the CVA–but we didn’t do a lot of load testing either.  The 405’s shot very well, the little collar button mold worked well, and we also shot some of the 350’s cast hard, gas checked, and pushed out at around 1900 fps.  I powder coat all of those bullets.  The single shot 45-70’s can be real fun–you can use lots of different types of loads for lots of different kinds of bullets.  Feel free to send me a pm if you have specific load questions.

Thanks for the info, I went and looked but the only 350 grain was plain base. I also powder coat but I looked in the data and Hodgdon was starting at (H4198) 2036 so I think I would need a gas check so I will keep looking for a mould.

The 315gn looks like a pretty good bullet.  They have it in gc also.

I just picked up a 4 cavity 460-267-SP yesterday.  This should be fun in the single shot 45-70’s.  You might want to take a look at that one for fun.
