      Hello,
I have just received this fine brass mold which I really enjoy using, casted about 500, coated,  push through sizing die (452). Loaded up some dummy rounds to set up dies for the progressive. When I did the plunk fit into three different 1911’s barrels for fit, I ended up with a OAL of 1.166″ Taper crimp at .470″.  Book says 1.190 for min!
If I lengthen out to 1.170″ they start to stick into rifling, and concerned about over pressuring! Have 20lb’s of of 700x and plan on using that.
Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated for seating depth?
      Thanks,
      Mark

I do not own the mold your specifically talking about but what about trying to size down to .451 ? I have a les baer umc, and it has a tight tolerances, however with sizing all my powder coated boolits to .451 , I have had no issues.
Another thing that stood out was the overall length and must be very specific to your mold, was the short seating depth. I was loading up some yesterday from another NOE 45 acp mold, and mine cycle perfect at 1.265.
I’ve always been a fan of seating long in my 45 acp loads.
I’m sure someone with the right answer will chime in and help out. Good luck

This one has to be seated a bit shorter than some of the others.  Normally I like to seat as long as my guns will allow.  This particular bullet can’t be seated out super long with the short wide flat nose (atleast in my guns).

              Mountain Man,
I use that 452 sizer also for my 454 casull cast, coated, I kinda doubt that going to 451 will help much to get me out to 1.190 Min length . I just try to stay in published data. I had issues with fail to feed with the lee 452 200gr swc’s and just want a 100% feed. I hate to sidline that mold, but tried everything on the swc in four 1911’s, I finally gave up.
I just recieved three other replies from three others on utube with this mold and coated bullets.  They are having the same issues and stuffing to 1.160 with sucess. I just didn’t want to be the first to venture into the unknown. It would be nice to have just a bit more play with seating, or at least some advice from NOE on the issue here to make me feel a little more at ease.
I don’t think I’ll be the only one wondering about this ACP seating issue if coated become mainstream!

I Thank all of you guys for you info on this one!

                Mountain Man,
I dug around and found some plated bullets at .451 and played around with that and I did gain about 20thou. on it, so you are right about 1 extra thou. on the Dia., No way to get further out than that! on all three barrels… Springfield, Remington R1 and XDM Match I didn’t bother trying on the other Remington commander.
                Anyway, thanks for the help!

I’m glad you got some new information to work with. That’s the most important part. I was completely not aware the slick sided molds in this case for the 45 acp, may need to be seated deeper than normal.
I was looking into that mold so for me, I appreciate the information, if I go that route, I will start much shorter. Glad you got it more in the zone you wanted.
One other item I thought of…. when powder coating, are you using all the same color? Just wondering if you were using a few different colors. The reds, blues and greens tend to be thicker then the clears. That also could be adding extra thickness somewhere possibly and making problems for you.

I believe you are the gentleman that called and we talked at length on this.

I did state to you that it looked like you needed the seat your bullets to 1.160 – shorter than the book listing of 1.190.
And that a heavier powder coat was going to compound the problem.

Like always start your load development light and work up and watch for feeding problems.
It does have a good size me-plate – but it also has a generous ogive.
I hope it works out for you.

                      Al,
Yes, we did talk about this, and I have to apologize for not mentioning our conversation! You did mention that seating deeper would be necessary, but honestly, I don’t remember whether we actually that we came up with a definitive number or not.  My quest here, is to find out from others their seating depth.  After researching for hours, I have yet to find one with this COL in this weight.  Now, after some comparison measurements this morning, the flat top is throwing wrench into things on COL., and the base of the bullet is not really much if any deeper than other designs of similar weight.

‘After pulling my foot out of my mouth, to back peddle’ (My comment, help from NOE)  appropriately should have been,,”Loading data, tips, etc,” may help us, that are a bit overly cautious?, but that may be venturing into a liability issue, which I know nothing about.  Not having published data, is not all that comforting..

I do appreciate everyone’s help on this!  Nice out today, may chrony some!

And, thank you Al, for such a wonderful mold!  After the suggested pre-breakin procedure my second casting session they all fall out without a tap!

                      Thanks again,
                      Mark

cobia, you can also take a look at this thread: http://noebulletmolds.com/smf/index.php/topic,1453.0.html

There is a forum member (Ranch Dog) who uses QuickLoad to share load data for specific bullet molds and cartridges.  He does one per day or so.  You can also ask him to run that bullet with your seating depth and the powders you want to use…  He may be able to help you out with that.

Another plus one for Mr. Ranch Dog. He has helped me many times with data that, like you, gave me that peace of mind I was being safe.
Speaking of nice days, today is definitely a range day. Happy shooting

                            Follow up:
Ran a couple dozen through the chrony today, in a fairly new stock Rem. R1, all went well and no failures to feed.
Low ran 815fps avg. high ran about 850 avg.

I’m feeling much better on this seating issue now, Time to stock up and see how they run in the other three guns. I have a strong feeling they will cycle just fine!

I will keep Mr Ranch Dog in mind next time I feel, I’m on ‘thin ice’!

Thanks to all of you, for this help!
