I’ve gotten a couple of these slick sides molds now and I’ll confess to being hooked on how easily bullets fall from them. I would really love to have a slick sided version of the 454-230-RN (H&G 34) mold. I can’t imagine being the only one who would be in for one of these.

      Anyone else interested?

I’ve thought about that too, but if you wanted to keep the bullet weight, you’d have to shorten the length a bit.  Are you wanting to shorten the length a little or just add a little weight?

I’m definitely not married to the weight. Would it be much trouble to rough up a drawing to estimate how much weight filling out the lube grooves would add?

I will try to draw it up and see how much weight is gained, but I do agree–it is one heck of a nice bullet profile in the 45.

Here is what I came up with.  Same dimensions as the original, minus the diameter (decreased from .454 to .453) and no lube grooves.  Only gains 5 gr in weight.  I like it!

I talked to Al on the phone and he said there is a possibility that we can use existing tooling to make this bullet and run it as an inventory run (only need 5 buyers instead of 10).  Would we want to take the diameter down to .453 or leave it at .454?  If we take the diameter down to .453, then the nose would change by .oo1 also.  If we leave it as is, the bullets will come out to the same as the original design, but with no lube groove (but will gain diameter from the powder coat/HiTek coating).  I’d be fine either way.

I’d think .453 and let the powder coat bump us back to replicating original dimensions.

Powder coat should bump the nose back to stock too?

                    Yup, should do it.

                        cornmastah,

How much different would we be looking at reduce the base a bit to make it a truer 230gr?

I’m not saying it has to be done. I’m curious since we added weight and bearing surface by filling in the groove. Do we need that extra weight?
Would looking at removing 5gr worth be ok? Could say I’m just looking at it from a convenient load data angle for new loaders etc.

No big deal, just a thought that crossed my mind.

                        Thanks,

I would think that using a mid level load, you should be able to just use the regular 230 gr load data just fine.  I’d probably just use my normal 230 gr load with that bullet.  I’m not pushing max with my normal load.

I say stick with the established dimensions as closely as possible – they’ve proven themselves.

I doubt 5 grains would make or break load data, so long as the loader is following safe practices.

I would be interested in this too. Please let me know when it is posted. (not sure if it would be posted in Inventory Run or Group Buy) And yes, as close to original dimensions as possible or else it isn’t really an H&G anymore.

ok, talked to Al to see if he can get us the official drawing–and then we can start the inventory run.  There may be a possibility of running these with hollow points and having a round nose pin.
