I have a 454-651 mold for my 45 Colt that I don’t use very often because  it drops a bullet that is about 345-350 and really produces more recoil than I enjoy. Recently I purchased a 45/70 and am looking for a bullet in the 350 range so I decided to try the 454-651. It drops at .4545-4550 and just falls thru a 458 sizer die. I installed a 45/70 seater die in the press and adjusted the seating stem down until it touched the bullet that was on top of the 45 cal. push rod and raised to the top position. By adjusting the seating stem up or down I can control the pressure on the bullet base as it is pushed into the die. No special swage die is needed. After some trial and error I had it set so that the bullet was compressed a little and the diameter was increased to.4615. This was easy to size down to 458 in NOE’s push thru die.

No it wasn’t. Some of the bullets were swaged to .4630 and were somewhat smeared looking at the nose section. The 454651 is a double crimp groove style and the crimp grooves were sized down some. They were not closed but they were squared off looking. The lube grooves were not noticeably altered. I don’t think it will make a difference in how they shoot but I plan to sort them into different groups and test them. I got the idea for this after looking at the section of past group buys with line drawings. In the 460 section there is a 460-330hp and it has the same profile as the 454651. This mold is not even in the web-store line-up so I thought I would try this to see how it works. I think there is some finer adjustment of the seating stem in the seat die that will bring more consistency to the swaged size of the bullet. This will not be something that many will use but for me it took a mold that was not being used into one that can be productive. It might help someone who has a gun with an enlarged barrel to have a usable bullet without leading the bore. It’s always fun to try something new.
