Hey board, a while back I saw a article on NOE expander plugs, should have copied it. Anyway I’m looking for an expander for .38 wadcutter. Does anybody remember seeing this. Thanks binski
I’ve no idea if I’m doing this correctly or not but I’m curious as to how the bushing swaging dies sold by NOE work. I’m new to casting and brand new to this forum but I assume they are used in conjunction with a Lee style reloading press setup. I’m in need of a .476 swaging die, preferably the screw into a reloading press type. I noticed in the store that NOE sells and stocks a .476 bushing and would rather buy it because i’m not too keen on waiting 6-8 weeks on a custom Lee die to be made. Any helpful information is very much appreciated.
I just ordered Another one the Lee Universal Expander Die sets. I also have the NOE. And I prefer the simplicity of the Lee, and actually “believe” that the simple flare, (just enough to Not shave any lead) gives more “neck tension” when inserting the bullets. When I size with the Noe expander the bullets are very easy to insert, and the case necks look smooth on the outside after seating. With the Lee, there is deffinitly more “resistance” when seating the bullet, and you can “see” the grease grooves, in the surface of the neck. The old guy who first taught me how to cast, said the tighter you could get them, with a good crimp the more consistant, they would shoot. It has Worked for me for almost 40 years. Now I have never tested Case “Life” with the Lee vs Noe Expander, so I can’t comment on that. But I’m basically lazy, and thats why I like the Lee the best, it’s simple to adjust and use. And being so lazy is why I had to order another one, because I didnt like haveing to unscrew it to change from small bore to large bore.
I don’t want more neck tension, I want ‘tween 1 1/2 and 2 thou neck tension no more no less a taper cannot give that accuracy and there is the risk of bullet deformation with the taper if the the case neck is too narrow, also the taper can increase the chances of the bullet seating out of square.
Comparing the two is like comparing apples and oranges, totally different tools that do totally different things.
