Sometimes the base of the slugs are out of round.  The slug on the top left is fully filled in and everything is great about it except that the base is an oval.  What is causing this defect?

Usually that will happen when you are opening the mold and trying to get the bullets off the pins.  You’ll want to make sure that you drop the bullets straight off the pins and do it somewhat gently.

I did notice that sometimes the mold was a little hard to open and that the bullets sometimes stuck on the pins and it took some fiddling to get them to fall off.

I think it was harder to open the mold and drop the bullets when I waited a long time to open the mold.  Does this make sense?  How long should I wait before opening the mold?

sorry for the slow responses… you’ll want to keep your casting pace fast enough that the mould doesn’t cool down too much or else you may end up getting wrinkles in your bullets.  I usually wait until the liquid sprue on top cools and solidifies and gives kind of a cloudy solid look if that makes sense, then I cut.  After I cut, I hold the mould upside down and give the hinge pin on the handles a few light taps as I slightly open the handles.  Then, once the bullets are free from the two mould block halves and dangling off of the hollow base or hollow point pins, I give a few more taps on the hinge pin of the mould handles so the bullets drop straight down without having pressure from the sides–this helps to prevent the oblong hollow points or hollow bases.  hopefully that helps.  I might have a video explaining this, I will look.
