Participant::First time casting with this RG model using the large hp pins. The alloy I’m am using was a mix of pure lead and Lyman #2. BHN =10-12 air cooled
Average weight was 191-192 grains prior to any powder coating
After a few rejects, the mold was dropping great boolits. Very pleased. I also was using the brass mold option and was running the alloy mix ranging from 760-790 (F) -

Participant::hey, so this last weekend I had a chance to play with the silicon baking mats. I have a question for you about the bullet bases on the ones you stand up on the base. How does your base look? Mine looks a little weird like the powder coat doesn’t cover the base all the way. Curious how yours look.
The water main on our house burst this morning so I’m still dealing with that. Tonight when I get cleaned up, I’ll take a closer photo of some of the bases to show you what mine look like.
If I could describe it, I would say it covers them completely, but comes out like a flat color. No gloss just the color of the paint you choose.
Sometimes I get an extra piece that sticks on the base, but when I run it through the sizer again, it cuts it off clean and square.
I do size prior and after coating also, not sure if that makes a difference just my process so far.
Try the hammer test on one base side up and see how it sticks. That’s what I did and the coatings never came off.2017-05-25 at 15:53 #507683brigettecuneo

Oh man, sorry to hear that. I hate it even when I break a sprinkler head or sprinkler pipe… A water main would be SO much worse. I hate fixing plumbing/irrigation problems. Good luck getting that taken care of.
I grabbed a couple this morning and tried my best to get up close to show what mine look like. A few pistol and 30 cal rifle.
Did you try the hammer test? What did yours look like? Thanks for sharing the pictures. Mine look similar on the base to the bottom left green bullet in the first picture, but I didn’t need to do the hammer test (I already know the PC sticks fine). The part I was most worried about is the part on the base where the PC is somewhat uneven and bare in a few spots. They will probably shoot fine, but I like the bases to be covered as much as possible and as evenly as possible (especially on the semi-auto rifles).

Participant::I have not recovered a rifle round yet going at top speed, but I have gathered the slower pistol rounds going up to about 1350 fps ( 500 magnum) and those did not have any part of the base coat come off. I was surprised.
I hope you find a way that works for you.
As far as the water main, yes, that was an event. Found out right about 4:30 in the morning when I heard the water gushing and the river down the driveway a good 100 yards. I was freaking out, lol.
Much better now and glad it only cost us 13 bucks for the parts need. It could have been a major ordeal.2017-05-25 at 16:37 #507686Full.Lead.Taco
Keymaster::I’ve had pretty good luck dumping them into the wire mesh baskets. You get the little boogers on the bullets where they make contact with the wire mesh, but it has worked well for me in the past. I am going to try a combo of a wire mesh tray with a textured silicon mat on the bottom of the tray next. It’s just a nice thing to have multiple ways of doing something–more tools in the toolbox.

Participant::Finally had another chance today to test fire some rounds. I settled on 7.7 grains of ramshot silouhette with a 10 shot average of 1030 fps.
It’s a snappy load, feels identical to another load I was developing in the jacketed world (230 grain hp @ 950 fps).
Target sample was from ten yards, nothing fancy, just 2 handed and was checking point of aim for the loads. Chest area was the NOE mold with a bhn of 10. Holes were a bit larger through paper then the Speer gold dot 230 grain hp I was testing. Groups were fine in both cases but the NOE projectiles certainly had a tighter group. Next round I shall give more of an effort and sand baged it or something to be more stable, but for 10 yards, I’m very satisfied.
I shot one round through a set of water jugs for a total penetration of 17 inches. The boolit recovered was fragmented. I was able to find 3 pieces totaling 143.5 grains.
Even though it fragmented I was pleased with the hit on the water jugs. Again, more violently then the 230 grain going a tad slower. I was expecting the heavier bullet to do more damage. I was incorrect.
Overall I could not be more happy with the mold. It runs easy, is very consistent, and performs wonderfully. The boolits it makes, also very impressive and for a great not over penetrating round, it’s perfect for my needs.2017-06-05 at 15:13 #507688brigettecuneo

Participant::Those deep hollow points are impressive on the ol milk jugs, eh? One of my buddies is always surprised at how well my NOE hollow point loads explode the jugs even with a lower velocity.
Good afternoon my friend,
So far I would agree. I’ve had a lot of fun working on this mold. It’s really a great lighter, faster set up than the standard, 230 hp. Once I was able to set up some sand bags and really settle down to shoot straight, less excited and calm, my groups shrunk even more. Top notch bullet mold for the 45 acp.
I have been gathering 2 liter soda pop and milk jugs for another round of testing using a new mold I just got ( NOE 452-230-hp small hole). First casting session was outstanding. Either I’m getting a lot better at casting or that mold in particular throws extremely consistent pills, after the heat cycle breaking procedure. The ones I quickly weighted, all were right at 229-230 grains with my alloy mix and using the large pins.
Once I’m done with this set, I’m hoping the giagantic 500 magnum super deep mold becomes a possibility. I saw a video recently where a guy shot his 500 magnum into a huge 50 lb. block of clay. It was unreal and formed the inner bubble the impact creates. I was hoping to try that with the super deep mold and see what comes of it.2017-06-22 at 19:36 #507692Full.Lead.Taco

You will need to record that for sure!

Ha ha. If I could figure a way to set up my iPad close enough, I certainly would make a video to show.
Here is a link to the video I was referring to. This gentlemen does some pretty cool tests.
