I’m having some trouble installing gas checks squarely on the bullet. So I searched on the forum in the section that has videos and found the answer in a video by Cornmastah. It looks like it might be just what I need. So the next step was to go to the NOE store and found they were sold out. Any chance they could be put on the list? Not in any big hurry as I know that there is a long list. But I will buy one once they are back in stock…THANKS.

I’ve started an unofficial list for you on the gas check die set as you requested.

How I solved the problem while waiting for that die set to be run was to purchase the gas check expanders in the proper size for the caliber GC, and the expanding die that is listed at the bottom of that store page.  That should allow one to compare that route with the method that I came up with below.

The Expander fits where the shell holder normally goes with the GC face down on the expander so that when it contacts the die at the top of the press stroke the GC cup lip is expanded ever so slightly. Allowing for a more easy seating of the GC prior to final sizing.

        https://noebulletmolds.com/site/product-category/bullet-casting-reloading/gas-checks-tools/gas-check-expander/

This GC set allows one to slightly open up the gas check cup, & thus allow it to slip more easily onto the cast product … as noted in the video that you referenced…

Since you have to with either NOE tool still crimp the gas check on it was a way that I found to get the job done with the products currently available at NOE …

IMPORTANT NOTE Look at the NOE dimensional drawing and note the gas check shank diameter … this will be the proper expander that you want for the GC’s for that caliber cast product.

For instance I tend to believe that a 30 caliber (7.62 dia cast bullet) normally has around a .284 diameter gas check shank… Therefore when you go to pick your expanding dies look at the shank diameter not the cast bullet final diameter…

Since GCs tend to vary ever so slightly from vender to vender … this tool also tends to come in handy from time to time for GC, & PB style GC’s.

Here is a link to some intel on that… http://www.lasc.us/CheckShankSize.htm

Yes I am aware of the expanders as I have a set of the ones needed but this looks like a better solution of the problem. If they ever get caught up enough to run a few I will gladly buy a set. Thanks Mike…as usual you are on top of things.

I have both variations … in my war bag.

I got one of the last die sets of the batch made in early 2020.

Personally I tend to like the GC adapter version … that I first noted to you…

            1. As sometimes if the batch of GC’s may be a tiny bit on the small side, in the cup opening dimension.

            2. The mould throws a cast product slightly larger than normal, 312 – .314 with a normal 30 caliber GC only being available on the current market.

            3. For those that want powder coat … The applied PC coating is a bit thicker than one would like … then expanding tends to produce a more consistent product without damaging a soft cast product or trimming off the excess PC.

As I said initially … I already have started an unofficial list with your name at the top … just incase that item does come up again down the line… so that I can post a notice on the forum if I see any indication of movement on the store website … Five according to the NOE store website main page appear to the minimum.

After the list tends to reach about 10 or more … It has in the past taken almost a year afterwards for the requested item to then reach the top of the pile … However that situation may appear to be improving…

However the squeaky wheel sometimes gets a boost… thus the continued numerous postings on the forum might tend to help in that endeavor to get another run produced … Provided those requesting that specific product follow through down the line  … should product suddenly appear …

The gas check die set that you refer to appears to have been out of stock for more than a year now while the expanders appear to still be refilled fairly regularly…

Your call on how you want to proceed …

Thanks for the info…I’ll keep an eye out for it. I have noticed that replacement items and a few new things show up once in a while. Al is getting things up and running again…only better things to come.

                Ok… I understand.

Be sure that you also have ordered all of the NOE TPs for all of your round nosed cast product that you plan to use the GC die set on. or have a large flat TP as shown for those items that have an HP or a WFN …

I tend to believe in that particular video did not specifically spell out that particular detail … ostensively to get the whole die setting assembly including the GC & your cast product lined up properly in line…

Many individuals do not tend to order a specific TP only to find out down the line that they tend to need that detail item …

Or tend to deform the nose of the cast product slightly, or worse yet… slightly bulge the nose section ever so slightly… so that the loaded round may have trouble chambering … down the line… when it comes into contact with the rifling.

Remember also to setup the GC seating contact point so that it is mid stroke on your press, so that you are not un-intent-ally hammering home the GC under max press leverage …

Ever so gently … tends to win this particular race…

Finally … Here is the start of your requested list.

                1. 762sultan                  Gas check die set                                                      06-27-22

                3.
                4.
                5.

I sincerely hope that you get to order your GC die set down the line … and that other members join you in your quest for the NOE Gas Check die set… That will most probably tend to move the item on the list… of items to be run.

There are now 9 sets of gas check seating dies listed in the NOE store as being available.

Below is the link to that NOE store site page…
