Participant::Why not have a good Loverin style for the various .338s? The 338 Fed, 338 ME, and 338/06 all have a solid fan base, and the 338 Win is an indisputable favorite. You can add Weatherby, Ruger, and Remington to the list of offerings available today.
I’d like to see an offering in the lower 200+ grain range for the short-necked 308 class options, and a 250+ for those long necked 338/06 types.
I’d be in for both. -

I wonder sometimes what the practical limits are for orbiting cutting bits with the CNC machinery. Could an existing 30 cal, or 8MM set-up be used for .338? Could the .338 be used for .358, 9.3MM, or even.375?

Participant::Here are a couple of molds to ponder over. The 1.135 long one will work on both 338 Federal and 338/06 but, will be short for the 338/06 A-Square freebore..
The 1.29 long one will work only on the 338/06. To my knowlege, there are at least two 338/06. One with a standard 1′ 22″ tapered throat and the 338/06 A-Square with a .220 long freebore. This bullet is the best compromise I could do. It’s designed for a COAL of 3.34. The A-square has a .100 longer COAL at 3.44, that would be to long for many ’06 mags.
The 1.135 long mold, will not fit the 338 Marlin Express. The longest mold that you can use for that one is 1.05 long.

How is the shank diameter determined for a gas check? All I can do is read until fall chores are over and the weather cools down to try casting. So I have nothing to offer in wisdom thoughts or ideas for, well, years!

These charts indicate gas checks need a max shank diameter at 0.327″ for a Gator. The Hornady chart indicates ID of the GC is 0.330″ so maybe the 0.327″ for a Hornady too? The 340320 201Gr. in the first link has a diameter of 0.329″…
So will the above drawings work just fine for gas checks? Would they be too lose? Not being critical, just curious. I have no way of knowing…

Thank you very much for bring that to my attention. The CAD program selects the GC dimensions and for some reason, the dimension for the 338 is WRONG. I will go back and correct the drawings.It’s not that there was a glitch and it picked the wrong one but, it’s wrong in the data base that stores the GC data.
Al, if you read this, could you please give me what you use as standard 338 GC dimensions?

Part of our procedure is to control the shank size at the time we run the cavities
We cut the first mould cast with it and measure the bullets from it.
At that time we physically try GC’s on and make any adjustments to make them fit.We have found discrepancies with the information we have seen from all the manufactures
And we have seen variances of .0010″ to .0025″ from batch to batch of GCs from just about all of the manufactures.This is a list that we work from.
Taken from samples we keep on hand.
