Participant::I’d love to see a 2x1kg or 4×0,5kg ingot mold.
Most of you guys are americans from what I’ve seen but for me who’s used to metric system and recalculating everything to grams and kilos, it would be really neat with an ingot mold for a kilo of pure lead.
Are there enough of us metric-users to get this one going?Regards, Andreas

Moderator::Metric is an abomination.
I live in a country that has adopted the metric system and it has gone to the dogs ever since, it makes people of my age strangers in our own country having to convert the damned metric into meaningful units and getting blank stares from ignorant flibbertigibbets in the shop when you ask for a 1/4 of pease pudding as well as pushing the prices of everything up. We are also tied to the metric abomination’s twin brother the european union which is a completely corrupt, undemocratic disaster.
Imperial good!
Metric bad!
Now a 2 x 2lb and a 4 x 1lb ingot mould could interest me.

Tell us how you really feel! :-X I just wish every thing I worked on were not 1/2 metric bolts, and the other .5 used SAE nuts?!?!?! 😮

::The guys aren’t trying to give you a hard time. They’re just expressing their own lack of interest and some of the headaches that mixed systems causes in our countries.
And, as such, there is probably little interest in a Kilo ingot mold.Tell us how you really feel! :-X I just wish every thing I worked on were not 1/2 metric bolts, and the other .5 used SAE nuts?!?!?! 😮
I had a Chevy van for about 4 years (until I stripped it of everything useful and scrapped it :o).
It was one of the best examples of metric and SAE combinations that I have ever seen, due to the way the fasteners were used for individual parts, but may be included in a larger assembly (or bolted on with hardware) that uses the ‘other’ system.
Every time I worked on that thing, it was plainly obvious which parts were assembled in the U.S., which parts were built or assembled in Canada, and which parts came from Mexico.
The U.S. “SAE” hardware fit my tools reasonably well and was usually decently machined.
The Canadian stuff was all metric, but did fit my metric tools well and was of decent quality.
And the Mexican crap was all metric … but poorly machined and seemingly always a half-size off. “Nope, it’s not 12mm. It’s not 1/2″. It’s 11.5 mm!” :
When my brother and I were stripping that thing, it got to the point that we’d call out “Mexican Metric” rather than ‘Hey, can you get me an adjustable wrench?’…So, if there are enough people to get a Kilo ingot mold group buy going, do them a favor and make sure it isn’t a Mexican kilo.

::Problem with lead and bullet alloys is they vary in weight depending on what the alloy is so you are not going to get exact weights anyway. Then add in the variation of filling the ingot mold to different levels when pouring. Really a 2lb ingot mold is more than close enough to 1kg, 5lb is close enough to 2kg, 1lb to .5kg etc. You just want blocks big enough to store a quantity of lead but not too big that they can’t fit in the pot or take too long to melt.

Participant::Haha now this thread didn’t turn out as I hoped but it sure is entertaining! To think metric’s THAT frowned upon!
For me it was the other way around when I bought a -74 Chevy truck and had to get a whole new set of tools with bloody confusing imperial sizes. How am I supposed to know if 5/16″ is bigger or smaller than 4/18″ or 76154/89768697″?
I’m actually starting to understand it by now, since pretty much everything handloading-related is american. And you’re right about the ingot difference, it isn’t a big deal. A kilo is 2,2lb or so and I weigh them anyhow so I don’t need a kg-stamped mold. I just want one! Becouse metric.

Participant::I got a good laugh out of all these posts. I never seen Droma get so hot under the collar. We all feel your pain from the stupidity of manufacturers building thing with half metric and half SAE. Do Jap cars come here in the USA with SAE bolts? NO. How about German? NO. Then why do we do it!! BUT we will not have to worry to much longer since Ford is moving to Mexico and cars will be assembled with Chinese bolts !! Now we will have to buy more tools to fit the unstandardized SAE or metric from China.

::I am not against metric at all, I actually prefer it. I just don’t like the mixing of the two. Pick one and lets get with it.
Agreed,
Instead of asking for a 1kg mold, just ask for a 2 lb mold, and be done with it,
much easier. and it is all the same as far as ingots are concernedI actually believe there is 2lb molds offered on this website
