      Okay, here goes…..

Awhile back I had several discussions with Al about making a .311ish “boat tail” (powder coat only) mold in 165-175gr for .30 caliber centerfires. After back and forth, he finally DID produce this mold; I was one of many to jump on this beauty.

Now, I’d like to see a comparable spire point mold for .22 centerfires. 58-68 grain weight, powder coat only, with the boat tail waist.

Comments? Thoughts? Idea’s? **  (Al, your thoughts?)

** BTW, I love the boattail .30 caliber, works in everything .308 – 315 arena.

        Okay, I’ll be first…….

I’m sure Al could make this easily; imagine a 6-8 cavity mold .228dia, boat tail config, 68gr, powder coat only?

We all would be waist deep in .22 centerfire cast bullets in a few minutes…..lol!

I am also very interested in a .224 cal boattail, but for use in PCP airguns…. I designed such a bullet, and there is a discussion thread about it here….

The original version looked like this…. It is 3.5 calibers long….

but airgunners are more interested in HP versions, so I recently shortened the nose slightly to push the Meplat back to enlarge it, with the hope that Al could use the smaller RG pin moulds he is working on to produce this…. An RG-4 mould would allow you to cast FN or HP bullets, 4 at a time, or a mixed batch, as you please….

The main difference to what you are proposing is the slightly narrower center section, intended to reduce the bearing area in contact with the bore… Airguns don’t have huge pressure available to overcome bore friction, so in general HTC designs are not suitable for our use….

I am wondering if you could live with a design such as this?…. If so, perhaps we can combine our efforts in drumming up interest….

I am not familiar with the .311 cal 165-175 gr. boattail bullet you are referring to, I have never seen it listed in the NOE Catalogue…. Al did produce a .308 cal version of the above 3.5 cal. long Bob’s Boattail bullet, at 176 gr., they are available in the NOE Store here….
