Hi guys,
I was working on some loads for my Rem 700 AAC-SD .308. I had previously only shot this round out to 300 yards and was getting hits on a 12″ gong. I finally got to an area where I could push out farther where I shoot across a river to the high bank on the other side. I was doing great with my 175 SMK loads but when I loaded the 311299 in Winchester brass over 29-34 grains of Varget (not even sure where I found those starting numbers now) I couldn’t get one round to get out past 500 yards? Anyone using this bullet out to anywhere near 1000 yards? Should I try a different powder? I’ve heard some like H4895 and some like H322. Just looking to see what kind of success others have had.

Your bullet will carry to 1000 yards fine with a 34gr charge of varget. (It should be getting almost 1900 fps unless it is a super short barrel). Having said that, it will also have over 1000 inches of drop at that range and be susceptible to wind drift. My guess is that your scope mount likely does not have enough elevation adjustment to adjust that much. Most long range shooters use a 20 MOA base (mount) that gives the scope an offset so they have enough adjustment to use it at 1000.
My scope rail has 20 MOA. So I could just be looking at an issue with the difference in zero between the two loads ( this and the SMK ) and just need to account for it in the scope? I just didn’t expect it to be THIS far out from what I was running at the time. I was already 6.5 MILs up from my 100 yard Zero for the SMK. I’ll zero at 100 yards with the 311299 and report back.

QL shows 44.5gr of varget as max with the 175 SMK and gives 2589 fps from a 20inch barrel. Drop at 1000 yards is 467 inches or nearly half what the Cast load is. I think you are onto something with the scope adjustments as the two loads are way too far off to be in the same field of view.
The difference in the two loads at 600 yards is
SMK(44.5gr charge) = 129 inch drop
311299 (34gr charge at 1900fps)= 285 inch drop.
