Opening day Muzzle loader season legal shooting time 0650. 11-5-2016
0748 Buck trotting down my driveway skylined about 200 yd Out.
0755 Turned towards stand and grazing & trotting directly at me. About 55 yd turned broad side. Ducked his head as I shot and didn’t even take another step. Just plop and ear twitched 2 or 3 times. Nice little 2yr old 150# 7 point.
100g Pyrodex.
That makes it about 2.5 days from Mould delivery
Used the 502-500 mould with 301 HB pin.
In the neck down the spine and lodged just under far side skin. Retained weight 261.8g

Partner in crime called with damage report after cutting up.
Tore out length of spine from entrance hole (look at picture just under and at rear of mould) and continued through right (off side) shoulder bone. His best guess was it stretched the skin out 10 to 12 inch.
Blood under skin of off side all the way to right ham
Three chips found in right ham that had traversed the gut cavity – it had punched a small hole and we washed it out with a hose just after gutting.
NOW that’s PERFORMANCE that would make Elmer smile
The 385g is a goin’ huntin’ in the morning and will try for a raking shot if possible
BTW with the 100g Pyrodex the 301 & 385 shoot the same POA at 25 & 100 yd. Go figure

Got a further clarification this morning on the way out
Shattered neck / spine 14 or so inch of bone.
Then a 50 cent hole through the off side shoulder bone.
Comment was “Wish I had taken some pictures”
Sounds like a great knock out for deer. I’ve always used my 30-06 for my deer and pig hunting but next year I think I’m going to try my 500 magnum with a lighter Boolit.
Initially I thought it would be too much power and just destroy everything but from your photos and report, I think it might just be even more humane. Nothing is worse then a follow up shot. I like them to never know it’s coming.

Same load 100g pyrodex, Maximum diameter across mushroom 0.814:Today’s both front shoulders a total loss due to bone fragments, So, Mountainman you are correct about possible lost meat depending on the hit.
Weight 261# Big for around here and fat like range beef from beans & clover.
Observation: Near shoulder bone completely fragged, top off both lungs, off side shoulder bone completely fragged and looked like only pushed out skin about 3″ so it was spent.Yesterday lost almost no meat. The 150# is more normal around here and fat is the norm.
Need to add that recovering a boolit is rare here.
I got the 301 back by accident of movement as or after I pulled the trigger. Movement is not at all rare at black powder speeds.
The 385 shoulder shot was on purpose by a friend in hopes of recovering a heavier one. Would not have tried it if there was any idea of the amount of meat lost. :'( That said it was an educational mistake.
Don’t think we ever recovered a commercial cast 240g 44 cal Keith fired in a 50 cal sabot. It was tried as a cheap alternative to the XTP / HP commercial offerings. From the git go it was a big success. JHP don’t come close in performance. One of the few cases cheap is WAY better
