I’m interested in a mold like the HTC459-500-SP except with a flat or blunt round nose suitable for use in 45-70 lever actions.  Weight needs to be at least 500gr.  Maybe a crimp groove?

          how wide of a meplat?

I don’t know the first thing about this, so I would say slightly larger than a large rifle primer?  Is 0.3 inch large enough?
My only concern is that some people say pointy bullets can set off primers in tube magazines while some say don’t worry about it.

I’ve looked around, other options I can find are either only 0.457 or outrageously expensive.

the nose will have to be shortened significantly in order to feed correctly.  Let’s see what we can throw together.  Any body else interested in a bullet like this?

Anybody know what the max nose length is to feed in an 1895 levergun or similar?

I measured some factory ammo at 0.45 inch if that helps?
It’s federal brass(ie. standard length) and there is very little extra room for more length based on my calibrated eyeball.

I would think you could just cut the tip off the htc459-500 and it’d work fine?
Making up the lost weight with extra metal in the base would be great if possible.

Will a factory crimp die be enough to prevent the bullets from being pushed back under recoil or would a crimp groove be needed?

When I get home on my computer I will try to draw one up using that htc 459-500 as a template.

What about the 460-530-FN  or the SC460-425-RF?
Remove the lube grooves, take a thousandth off the diameter, and change the length to get the weight closer to 500?

I’m not picky about the shape or exact weight, there are just no good mold options for this.

I ended up taking some of the things from the RCBS 530 mold and came up with this.

So, here’s what I did to come up with this bullet design.  I took the RCBS 530 basic shape and modified it.
                        1. removed the lube grooves
                        2. shortened up the bullet a bit to lighten it from 530gr to 508gr
                        3. decreased the diameter of the main body (driving band) to compensate for increased diameter after PC
                        4. took out the first driving band in front of the crimp groove and gave it a slightly longer nose
                        5. gave it a slightly wider meplat with a radius on the edge (which increased the BC from .3056 to .3338)
                        6. kept the bore riding section, but decreased the diameter from .448 to .445 to account for the increase in diameter from powder coating (this part won’t be sized when the rest of the bullet is sized)

What do you guys think?  I think this one would work quite well but am open to suggestions.

I just cast my first bullets two weeks ago so I’m a newby to casting.  I will powder coat these and shoot them subsonic.

Why did you choose 0.458 instead of 0.459?  I got a lee 0.429 mold to learn casting last week…  they size to 0.430 easily after powder coating.
Would it be better to cast the diameter you want rather than a thousandth or two under(and relying on the powder coat to add diameter)?
Or am I stressing over details too small to matter?

Also, what about the weight…  The lee 429-240 I cast came out at 260gr.  The lead I used is range scrap so I assume it is very soft and dense?
Will these come out 8% heavy for me?  That would make them around 540gr?  Marlin 1895 are currently 20 inch twist, I think even 540gr will be stable at 1000fps?

Ignorance is bliss in the casting world for me!  I think it meets my needs?

The powder coating usually adds .002-.003 or more depending on how thick you do it.  That is the reason for the .458 size bullet.  It should make it easier to size down to .459 after powder coated.  Not totally worried about that part because you can always size down a little but can’t size up (without powder coating).  The bore riding section of the bullet I took down .003 because I really don’t want that to be too oversized.  We could bring it up a little to .446 if people want.  This bullet should be stable at 1000 fps no problem.  the bullet stability calculator says a 20 twist barrel should stabilize the bullet at even slower speeds (like even 700 fps–not that I would want to shoot them that slow).  As a side note, the rcbs bullet is even longer.  As far as your question about alloy, yes, if you are using a more pure alloy (higher lead content) then the bullets will weigh more.

Do you think Hi Tec coating not powder coating will bring it up to .459?

I’ve not used HiTek Coating before, but I would think that any coating would bring it up at least .001.  If people feel more comfortable with the bullets dropping at .459 and sizing them down, we can change that dimension.

It will need to drop at .459 for the hitek coaters I believe. Mu coating doesn’t seem to add barely any thickness to the bullet. It’s great seeing all of these smooth sided bullet molds being made.
