      This is a continuation of a NOE 510-380-RF (HB) great plains for traditional BP group buy last year.

      This is similar but for inlines

      BP Hunting season is lurking – I have my Keith mould collection – so back to 50 cal BP inline wish.

      I’ve talked with Al about modifying the 510-380-RF Great Plains to .502 diameter which is suitable to modern inlines and he is agreeable to the project.  He has limited time so we decided that I would do a makeup to the 510 GP drawing and get comments before he does a production drawing.

      Points to ponder / consider and comment on:
      Hornady developed the GP for traditional BP with larger bores and deeper groves.  Lyman also says their 50 cal Plains “fits most traditional muzzleloaders”

      We have a very generous deer bag limit so a lot of data can be obtained quickly

      We found the 44 Keith style 240g SWC in sabots worked MUCH better than the JHP normally used.
      Bad news is somewhere between 500 and 1K sabots shot and your inline barrel sabot fouling build up is a disaster.  No amount of scrubbing or solvents will dissolve or remove sabot fouling.

      With several fouled inlines that patterned instead of grouped there was plenty of experimentation.

      We tried all the normal center gun cleaners.  Then Toluol, MEK, xlyene, ether, lighter fluid, paint stripper, and more on fired sabots.  All we got was nice clean sabots.

      The GREAT news is Brownels Shotgun Wad Solvent WORKS both liquid and gel.  Swabbed out and left over night the sabot goo came out in globs.  Second application got only a little that was left.
      Bores were shiny clean and original accuracy was back

      The OLD Browning gun cleaner 8oz UPC 023614179412 that says” Removes lead, copper, plastic, carbon, powder fouling” does work although not as well as Brownels.  It has been discontinued for years – wish I’d bought more on close out CHEAP.

      The 510 GP in pure lead doesn’t fill out well.  About 40:1 works well and is still soft enough for BP.  Beating a few .510 bullets with .485 groves into a 500 bore with .490 grooves deforms the nose and after about 2 shots you need a hammer to drive it through the fouling and seated on the powder – bad idea in BP.

      The LEE REAL works fine and scrapes the fouling out on each reloading.  So we use a sharp trailing edge of the bullet as a fouling scraper.  Al thought that a sharp band trailing edge about .005 deep would release OK.

      Wider, deeper grooves are needed to give the fouling a place to go as it is scraped off.

      Hornady GP uses 4 grooves and is 380g.  Lyman Plains (508656) take is 3 groove 395g.  I like the 3 wider groove idea better because the wider groove gives fouling more area to pack in and displace grease.

      I sweaged a number of the 510 -380 GP to 502.  This left almost no grease groove.  They were chucked up in a small HF lathe and grease grooves turned to about .475 x .055.  Lube was the Fryxell take on “Alox” using molygrease.  Accuracy was not too bad considering the deformed nose caused by the chuck and I’m sure they nutating about the CM because of the lousy machining.  BUT I achieved what I was looking for.  They started and rammed easily as long as I cared to keep stuffing them in.  Cleanup was a nothing with the normal hot soapy water.

      I talked with various competitors at PB vendor booths at the NRA / AM in Louisville and most liked 400g or more for 50 cal inline twist.  Thus the weight of about 400g in the HB configuration.

      The Keithesque profile of the nose is influenced by the effectiveness of the 44 Keith like240g SWC in the sabots.

      There are two different brass ramrod tips proposed both with 10-32 threads.  The competition fits the nose and flairs to 0.495 to keep the nose centered.  The field tip is flat at 0.35 diameter as that is the ramrod diameters I have.  You got a smaller diameter one? Let’s hear about it.  The flat tip came from filing 10-32 brass screws flat and screwing them into my ramrods so they do not deform the meplat.  I also have a flat on the starter.

        One issue I do have, and this is my mistake as I misunderstood your intentions with this design, is that I was looking for a plain based bullet weighing around 400 grains.  If I go with a plain based mold I’d be looking at well over 500 grains as cast, right?

        That is not the plan as discussed with Al

        Each weight in FP will have 2 base pins.  One ea HB pin at around 400, 450 or 500g and one ea FB pin a bit over 400, 450 and 500g.  That is 6 base pins per cylinder giving 6 bullet possibilities per cylinder mix or match.

        I think a HP would be stuck at the heaviest weight as far as I can guess.  Al may be able to do some fancy HP pins for lighter weights, but I haven’t visualized it so far and I do not think he has done that rendition of an RG design.  We did not discuss an HP. design at all.

            The SAAMI cartridge OAL is 1.90 to 2.25
            The SAAMI Max case length at 1.625 which leaves 0.625 in front of the crimp grove.

            Hornady Guide #7  lists the 500g XTP COL as 2.040”  Lots of length to spare

            Hornady 50105 is the 500g XTP FP
            I called Hornady and got measurements: OAL is 1.009.  Cannelure to meplat is 0.435

            The Western powders load data guide 6.0 I picked at the NRA AM in Louisville lists:
            Hornady 500 XTP max as
            AA#9 29.7g for 1403 fps
            AA4100 33.2 for 1466 fps
            AA5744 39.9 for 1503 fps
            AA1680 43.7g for 1533 fps.

              Wow, you really went above and beyond my good man. Thank you for doing all that extra work. So, it looks like it would work just fine. That’s very promising.
              Another bonus is I already have been using some of western powders in the 500. Really like enforcer and also accurate 5744. The enforcer pours like water.
              As far as molds, I do like the brass version over the aluminum but would take either if that’s all there was, just not a gas checked mold. For my applications a plain base is preferred. Thank you again for your help and information gathering. Sounds like I’m in for sure now.

                  We have one for his 30 cal PB checkmaker dies and the 500pb. Both work wonderfully. Such a clever idea. I also recently just purchased one of his pocket lube loaders for the 500. It’s a nice portable small job lube bar. I like it.

                    Ask Al about the possibility of the 2 different ram rod heads I put on the original drawings.  He’sa thinkin’ on it. No eye deer if it will grow wings.

                      The Keith masters have a taper on the back of the front groove for crimping.

                      I see no BP down side to modifying the front groove to have the Keith crimp groove style and an up tic for the 500S&W and maybe BPCR. 8)

                          i looked at the first new image at 500 grains. I like the idea but also believe as you stated a crimp groove of some type would be necessary for the 500 magnum in a revolver. I’m still interested as I’m sure that modification can be made. I am however looking for the hollow point version only.
                          I see the hollow base, but that’s not what I can use. If I had a rifle for it, maybe so, but my girl has been really fare with all my mold purchases, but I need to be careful there,lol. Mama needs to be happy, if you know what I mean. I have not broke it to her about the “1000 dollar club”. Lol
                          I’m hoping there is enough interest for each type, but for me the 500 grain solid is close to a mold I already have.
                          If there was a possibility of having some be hollow base for the black powder folks and maybe another type for us wheel gunners and handi rifle shooters. I’d love a brass hollow point mold somewhere in the range of 450 to 500 grains, plain base. If there was an option for a few different hollow point pins for different weights, that would just be even better. Or say an rg4 version with two, 500 grain hollow points, and two, 450 grain hollow points, brass and in a plain base version with an added crimp groove.

                            My Crystal ball says the final drawings will have a Keith style top groove for crimping :)

                            As I understand the mould making processs:

                            One tool is all that is necessary for both standard mould (no RG), RG base or RG point

                            The RG HB version will have 6 pins per cylinder.
                            In this form the nose is up and cut by spruce plate
                            1PB & 1HB for each length
                            The shortest pin will be the heavy weights HB or PB.
                            The next pins will have a ridge that fits into and seals one lube groove up from the bottom and produce BP or HB depending on the pin.
                            Longest pins will seal the same way in the second groove up from the base and make the lightest PB or HB
                            Mix or match cylinders

                            Machine the block the other way up.
                            The RG HP version will have 2 pins per cylinder.
                            In this form the base is up and cut by spruce plate
                            This RG versions will have FP or HP for each length.  Most likely 3 different moulds to achieve 3 different weights by backing the tool out.

                            This is same way the Keith moulds were made HP or HB.
                            This rendition of the RG Base down tip at spruce plate is 3 different length base pins for 3 different weight Keithesque FP.
                            The HP RG form is the NOE standard RG HP form.

                            The RG HB version will take a bit more care in closing blocks with the medium or long pins so as not to damage the lube groove the pin seal into.  That is why I am probably getting brass as Al is a lot softer / more easily damaged in closing with longer pins.

                            I should have spent longer watching the CNC machine making the blocks and maybe I could have explained it better.

                            Swede will probably need to correct my ramblings a bit :-[
