I love shooting suppressed guns and after owning several 300 Blackout guns the 9×39 Russian has caught my eye as the ammo is finally available in the US from Wolf and Tula. I recently build a bolt action pistol with a remington 700 action, 9″ barrel from KAK industries, Pork Sword pistol chassis from Black Collar Arms, and MDT 6mm br magazine. I just getting into casting and found a used NOE mould on Ebay .368 280gr FN. Im interested in a 4 or 5 cavity mould in .368 in the 285-300 grain range (or even heavier) with a SP type point without lube grooves designed for HTC or powder coat…similar in shape to the HTC459-500-SP mould. Ar15 uppers have been out for a while, Krebs Kustoms is making AK pistols in 9×39, and KAK industries has Redding dies which I purchased and people are starting to reload/load this ammo from 7.62×39 cases. I have loaded some of the commercially available 9.3mm bullets with 7.62×39 brass necked up and fireformed (attached pics shows wolf round, handload before fireforming with a Nosler 270gr bullet, and a handload with a Missouri bullet co. 275 gr flat tip bullet). Anyways, maybe some people will be interested and we can get a mould made.

I think this would be an excellent idea.  I’ve also been interested in the 9×39 cartridge.  What diameter do the bullets need to be?  And do you have any info on any current factory bullets?

I have Factory Wolf ammo and I just got some Tula 9×39 too;however, I’ve been slammed at work and haven’t had a chance to pull bullets and measure them. A user over on AK files forum did an excellent write up and YouTube video of the Wolf 278gr subsonic ammo. https://www.akfiles.com/forums/showthread.php?t=384695

There seems to be variation in bullet diameters for this cartridge. I have heard anywhere from .364 to .366. I have shot handloads out of my barrel with normal 9.3mm commercial bullets with no problem and the mic at .366. I just got my used NOE mould in .368 which is what Al lists on the site for .368. I plan to cast them and size to .366. Again, I’m not a bullet or a casting expert so any input on this subject is greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately it will likely be a few weeks before I can measure, cast, load, and shoot my bullets.

Skip the bullets and measure your bore.

I was curious about the bullet dimensions to see if we could draw up something with a similar nose profile which would work.

Ok, found a good deal on the barrel and took the plunge.  I got a hold of a round that I disassembled.  I drew up this bullet based on what I saw and then modified it to how I think I’d like the bullet.  Feedback is appreciated:

Added TL grooves and changed the diameter a little:

Sorry to revive an old thread but this keeps popping up in my google searches.
I’m new to 9×39, just looking for a good mold.
Seeing how old this post is now,  What bullets are you all using?
The 368 285 Plain Base molds haven’t been in stock or I likely would have ordered one of those.

Then I got to playing around with Gordons Reloading tool which could get me in trouble.
Has anyone been able to load anything closer to 400gr?  I may be wrong but it would appear that this cartridge is capable of handling much heavier bullets.

duceolsen – You’re right, the molds in stock are all GC. You can post in the “What you would like to see ran” to request a run of the PB. You’ll need a total of five users to get the run completed.

cornmastah – where did you find a barrel? All the barrels I find don’t have the proper twist.

The KAK barrels have the correct twist but they’re all under 16″. Unusable in my neck of the woods, in a legal sense. So the search continues.

For people getting into this cartridge now that it is getting more attention, keep in mind that bullet diameter varies even more than noted above.  You may want to stick to all US-made parts and components, and casting your own bullets won’t hurt.

The commercial Russian guns chambered for 9x39mm are almost exclusively smooth bore with tapered throats.
In a private discussion elsewhere, I have verified with an importer in Georgia and users in Russia and Kazakhstan that some commercial ammunition uses bullets as small as .358″ and some bores are just as tight.  The more common bore diameter currently available to our repressed brothers in arms is .360″, so the ammo makers don’t seem to care much about bullet diameter as long as it is *usually* .360″ or bigger.

Wolf went with SP-5’s .364″ diameter for the export market, but they don’t seem to be holding tolerances very tight.

So here is what I’ve done.  Feel free to call my crazy.
The plan is to form-1 a suppressor in the future so I’m not going to bother with any gas checked bullet designs for this.
I’m not exactly sure of the lead hardness I’m using, I’ve been adding a lb of lyno. to a 20lb pot of plain lead.  Seems soft but I’ve not had any issue in any other caliber so far.

The .368 plain base moulds I didn’t see coming back into stock any time soon so I ordered one of the 376-329 moulds.
Sizing in one step from .376 to .366 without too much difficulty.  I did get a thin 1/16″ long skirt when they were run through unlubricated, but this was easily folded under and cleaned up when powder coated and run through the sizer again.  The bullet length after sizing runs around 1.37″

My first attempt will be using some old blue dot in some loads that I’ve run through gordons reloading tool.
They chamber fine right at 2.1″ OAL.  With a seating depth of .7736″
I hope to run these over a chrono and get back to you.

yeah, it appears that the specs are all over the place when it comes to bullet diameter/bore diameter.  It would be nice to get a bullet drawn up that will work for this.
