Since lead wheel weights and print shop linotype are going the way of the dinosaur, many casters are looking for ANY other sources of lead.  The above pictures show insulator pins, the tips which have cast lead threads on them Each pin has enough lead for maybe three or four .45 caliber bullets.

In the old days, these pins were made out of wood, and in the new days, the threads will be nylon, and our local power company is phasing them out.  I realize lugging a box of these home isn’t as profitable as carrying a five gallon bucket of wheel weights back in the time when every one of them was lead, but I just wanted to give everybody a heads up so that they know that they exist.

The older ones have the lead threads pressed on to the shank, and they can be pulled off with a couple of whacks with a hammer.  The vast majority are cast on to threads or knurled surfaces, and must be melted off of the steel shanks.

The lead seems to be very soft.
