I like my NOE Moulds. I need a new one. LOL! I shoot an .50 cal Inline BP rifle. I am in the market for a .452-.454 dia cast rifle/handgun bullet, greater than 250gr, that when sized will fit in a plastic sabot and shoot really well. I was looking at 454 265Gr. WFN,  454-280-WFN, or the heavier 454-325-RF? Does anyone have any experience with these bullets or have suggestions for a NOE mould that will work in a sabot/BP Inline rifle? Thanks….

What distances are you planning on shooting it at?

In the 50-100 yard range. In the places I hunt if you need more than a hundred yard shot you are in wide open spaces. We ‘in the east’ ya know. But if someone knows an spectacular cast bullet/sabot combination that is accurate beyond that I am all for it. Deer of course. But a friend of mine took a 300 lb black bear this last year about 150 yards behind my house. LOL! Presently my bag has those kinds of bullets that are ‘All Copper’ no one talks about on these types of forums. And since I started casting I felt i could find a suitable replacement.

It would be cool to cast a few out of really soft lead with a slick sided mold since you wouldn’t need powder coat or lube. How heavy are you thinking you want to go with it?

I had considered that…kinda like one of the paper patch bullets. i didn’t know if that might be a good option. And weight? I am not really sure. Why I was putting feelers out to see if many or any had tried it. Guess I can be one of the first. LOL. . I have one of the Lyman Maxi Ball moulds in the 370ish grain range. It’s why I was considering  454-325 grain NOE bullet mould. I like the idea of a heavier weight bullet. NOE mould can be purchased with the HP option as well. I can get the plastic sabots for .429, 452, and I think a .458 size. Not sure about a sabot for .40 cal. So, I’m not specifically tied to a caliber/diameter bullet. Again I am considering any and all options.

As far as the lead itself? I felt that since the plastic sabot rode on the lands and grooves the bullet itself wouldn’t necessarily need to be pure lead. Guess it could be. Maybe a harder lead? WW or Lyman #2?

Yeah just depends on if you want more expansion or penetration.  Do you know if you can do .458 sized bullets for sure?

I haven’t shot any .458 ‘J’ bullets using an orange sabot, but according to the manufacturer the sabot/petals on the sabot are thin enough you ‘can’ use them in .50cal. I do need to slug the bore. However, I can just use a .452-.454 bullet. And as far as penetration vs expansion? If a black bear was to amble into my zone penetration would probably be better. As far as deer hunting goes? A .300ish grain lead slug in .452-.454 gran would make much difference if pure lead or WW. But you sure have given me some ideas to think about. Hard to tell how accurate the bullet/sabot combination will be until I pick one and pull the trigger. I think I am going to stick with something on the heavier end.

I’d take a look at the ranch dog mold: SC454-290-RF RD

Thank you Cormastah. Sorry for the delay…with it being Spring, work, and other odd things I was late replying. That looks like an awesome bullet. I think that will be my first try and if all goes well and works I won’t look further.

most sabots are not square in the bottom corners…  so a bevel base or GC design might seat better
