This subject is posted in the group buy discussion section of castboolits, but just to make sure I caught everyone, I thought I’d post it here also.  Attached are photos and a drawing of Don Eagan’s MX2-30-H bullet. Also a pic of 100yd results out of a nigh 120yr old Krag. The bullet has to be seated long in a Krag, but fits the 30-06, and more specifically the Garand throat, very good. For short necked cartridges like the .308 or 7.5×55 another of Don’s bullets may be better. I’d like to see it offered in different sizes, as NOE has done in the past, .311, .314, and .316 with corresponding enlargement of the borerider for each size, mostly so I can get larger version that will seat in my Krag and be under max magazine length, but also for my Mosin. Would like to see it nose pour, but that might be a problem for the maker.  Al, can you do nosepour?  Click on the PDF to see a drawing.  Scroll down, it’s on there.

        Here is the real Eagan.

I drew it in Lino as that is what the original is but, if Al does his drawing in WW, he will need to reduce the Diameters by .001 to get it to cast .310 in lino.

Looks pretty close Frank.  You can see the dimensions he gave if you click on the PDF. I do put a little radius on the square cut nose with a Lyman top punch.  Good BC, does that estimate use the G2 drag function?  I’m sure there are others who have used the bullet, perhaps they’ll chime in with their results.

I was only going by the 1.235 dimension that I asked for over on Boolits. 30 cal GC are .015 thick so I deducted that from the OAL and scaled the rest.

I put the tappered bore ride on it (and I like that) because you said yours had that. The Egan drawing doesn’t use it.

I’ll redo it to Egans DWG and repost, if you like but, leave the bore ride as is.

I had a feeling you were working on it when you asked at castboolits.  The actual bullet has the taper, .001 in .25″.  I’ve only had a couple original Eagans, it appears he lowered the cherry a few thousands after cutting the cavity, leaving a little cup at the base that gaschecks press nicely into.  Course that’s something couldn’t be duplicated with base pour, except the little divet we get at the cutoff point.  There’s a hole in the center of the base cutting blades of the cherry, .10″ in diameter, that wouldn’t cut mold material if the cherry was lowered a bit, or as BaBore mentioned he does, given a few twists by hand after cutting.  That’s cherries I have for a couple other of his bullets, unfortunately I don’t have the 30H cherry.

I would be in for one.  Something a bit different to play with.

I deleted my first drawing and replaced it with the Egan.

The bands actually drop at .311 in the alloy I’m using, which would be similar to lino, but might have a bit more tin.  In my Garand, the borerider is just off the lands at an OAL of 3.33″  The check is right at the base of the neck.  Hope it warms up a bit so I can go try some loads I have finished.  I can’t say how it does at slower speeds, what little I used it out of my Krags I stayed around the same 2175fps speed.  Did pretty good out of my K31, but the check was below the neck/shoulder junction.  For the 1.25″ length 30US, Eagan recommended a minimum velocity of 2000fps out of a 1/12 twist.  Other bullets of his I’ve shot, the MX3-30-AR, the MX2-243 seemed to have a sweet spot at close to 2000fps.  The 243 was close in design to the 30H, just littler.  I was getting coyote head sized 200yd groups with it, when there wasn’t much wind.

I’ve discovered something that could be a problem for those wishing to cast with softer alloys, not with the 30-H, but with the 30G, which has a smaller meplat.  The nose bends with softer alloys!  I can see where it has pulled away from the side of the mold when the sprue is struck.  A harder alloy took care of it.  Wouldn’t be a problem at all if it was base pour, which I’m sure Swede would much prefer.

Probably so Rich, it didn’t take much high tin babbitt added to what was basically WW to make a difference.  It only made 3gr difference in the bullet weight and it is still heavier than Eagan’s spec so the alloy’s likely softer than lino.  Nose bending wouldn’t be a problem at all if the mold was base pour.  Also, with base pour that nice radius on the meplat Frank drew can be kept.  The thread is not getting much attention either here, on castboolits, or a link I put on a facebook casting page.  I suppose I’ll have to go out and shoot a good HV group to open peoples eyes.  Mr. Eagan knew what he was doing.  It wasn’t this bullet, but the first group I ever shot with one of this bullets opened my eyes!  Less than an inch for 12 or 13 shots at about 80yds out of a 118yr old rifle @2000fps.  I threw the Lee mold I had that cast about the same weight bullet away!

Here, we are discussing the possibility, and seeing if there is enough interest.  If we manage to get enough interest, we’ll move on to the group buy stage.  Pricing would the same as other group buys here, producer would be NOE.  Al has gone out on a limb for me before and produced a mold when there really wasn’t enough buyers to cover the tooling costs, I wouldn’t ask him to do it again.  Thank you for your interest.

I would very much like to see this done as a nose pour, but that’s not a deal breaker, and orbited out as a .325 would put me in for a couple of moulds,,,,,,,

I like the shape of it, looks like it would work good in my garand.
New to casting, so I have no real say on how, just would like one for a 30-06.
