Full.Lead.TacoKeymaster::The die bodies are made, but the pieces that slide into the shell holder spot need to be machined (not sure what you call those). I was at the shop and he was showing me how they work–I had not seen those dies before. I was amazed at the simple design of the dies and function and how all of a sudden, I need one. I’ve been using a soft mallet to help gas checks go on top of the powder coated gas check shanks or “over sized” gas check shanks. This does the same thing, but without any tapping–and probably a lot more precise. This die does not crimp the gas checks on, just seats them evenly and squared. Crimping has to be done in a separate step. Anyways, cool tool that is almost ready for people to buy.

Participant::I have had one for quite a while and every time I use it (like last week) I am extremely happy that I have it. However you have been seating them, try one of these and you will be thinking why you have been doing it any other way. Al makes awesome, really functional stuff.

I’ve been looking into getting one of these also. I’m trying to see how it works though, and wondered how different it was from using the set up I am now.
Currently I’ve been using the NOE push through sizer base that is for the top punches. That part goes on my ram. Then with the correct NOE top punch for the mold, place my boolits nose down in the holder, and then use the push through sizer ” nose first bullet ram” in reverse with the body die. So you end up with a flat surface for the gas checks to hit and seat squarely.
I seat them before or after powdercoating with no issues and nice contact. Lastly they go through the body sizer for whatever diameter I need and the checks are on there for good.2017-03-30 at 16:10 #504120
Full.Lead.TacoKeymaster::I will see if I can do a video on how to use it/how it works (as soon as I have some free time). But, basically if you have gas checks that don’t pop on easily, this die helps fix that. It ONLY seats them, it does not crimp them on. No more tapping gas checks onto the bullets with a soft mallet for me.

You install the correct nose punch in the die and snap a flat base into the shell holder. The difference is the die holds the nose punch in a fashion that lets the bullet adjust to make sure the GC gets seated in flat. Not sure how to describe it? The nose punch is fixed into a stem that has some movement (I want to say coaxial?) so the bullet with check doesn’t have to be lined up exactly perfectly. Hopefully Cornmastah will be able to get a video up, probably the best way to show it.

Participant::Thank you gentlemen.
Mr. Cornmastah makes good videos so that would be excellent.
I’ve had in my cart for sometime the tool for turning the oversized shanks and was waiting for this to come back in stock also. The NOE 311-198-SP I’m working with now has a shank where the gator checks do not snap on so well. That’s when I was using the push through die set to install the checks. I did not have one bad one. They all seated perfectly, and with no nose/body deformation. So it got me to thinking how different the gas check seater would be. Work better or the same. Seems to me the same idea that Neal stated where it’s just in 180 degree reverse order.
I’m not trying to be a cheap just would rather use that money for another mold, if what I have currently will do the same job is all. I love my tools but I always have more room for more NOE molds.2017-04-06 at 13:02 #504123
Full.Lead.TacoKeymaster::Ok, as requested, here is the video showing the NOE Gas Check Seating Die in use. Al let me take his spare die, I’m not sure I want to give it back now, ha ha. Anyways, here it is:
FYI, looks like Al finished making the seating stem–they are in stock right now.

Participant::Great video! Hope everyone can see how the center stem of the die that holds the nose punch has some movement and allows you to still seat the check on flat even when you have started it on a bit crooked. Because the bullets are dark blue and the checks are bright copper you can see that they are misaligned on many of the seating’s and you can see how the seater has enough movement in stem to self adjust and seat the check on square. That is what makes this thing so great. I got it to originally seat checks on pointed rifle bullets which is great because you can use the correct nose punch to do it right. I used to put them on as best I could and hope that they would get pressed on fully and square when I ran them through my Star lubesizer. I found that many times there was not enough resistance during sizing to seat them square and many times they were crooked. I know many will say it is an extra step but now I know that all my checks are seated on my bullets correctly.

Participant::Another vote for an excellent video describing everything it comes with and step by step how it works.
From what I can see, I’m doing it in the exact opposite. Works the same, as the pointy 311-198-sp I was doing came out awesome every time.
Not a drinker here, but I did laugh from your comment. I’m glad I’m far away and do not have high credit card limits, because if I ever went there, I would want a trailer to bring back my cart items. Lol
Have a good day gentlemen.2017-04-07 at 19:38 #504127 -
