I decided to pour a few bullet before heading back to the office tonight, I wanted to see what the flat point, cup point, and hollowpoint pins looked like with this new mold, so I did one of each. The mold was heat cycled four times then cleaned with acetone and a toothbrush. The mold did get way too hot, hence the frosty bullets, but I’m powdercoating them anyway so no biggie.

If I wanted to run flat points I think I’d have to tun the pin depth a little, but I think I’m going to stick to the cup points and hopefully see how they do on deer this fall

Coated them. Shake and bake doesn’t work too well with just one bullet at a time rattling around a #5 container but I wasn’t going to break out the ESPC gun and set up the compressor for just three bullets lol

I’m jealous!  I got my mold before you, but you beat me to the casting!  I need to sit down and crank out a thousand or so of those beauties!

I finally got around to sitting down with this mold for a decent session and got 700 of these beauties cast up. This mold really likes to be run hot, once I get it up to 475* it starts raining perfect bullets. A little frosty, but I’m powdercoating so no big deal.

I cast up a pile of those too, but I went with the deeper hollow point pins.  Do you prefer the cup point or are you just testing them out?

I’m just testing them out, more than anything. I plan to try to take a few deer with these in the fall with a pretty stout load, so I want a controlled expansion and not a fragmentation like I’m afraid a deep HP might give me. I haven’t honestly done a ton of side by side testing though.

ahhh, ok that makes sense.  For me, I don’t mind the fragmentation as long as it makes stuff like milk jugs blow up.

I mean… You can but you might have a problem with bullet recovery.  Try coating them safety orange or something haha

What kind of alloy do you prefer for an expanding hollow point?  I’ve heard too much antimony makes the bullet too brittle.  Would something like CWW + 2% tin be too hard? 

I cast my first hollow points out of straight 20-1 but that’s just because it’s all I have.  I usually alloy in some superhard for non-expanding bullets.

If you want the a good expanding hollow point you’ll want an alloy with at least 2% tin and no more than 3% antimony. I’d try stick-on wheelweights with 2-3% tin if you can. Also make sure your pot temp is at least 750*
