Love the idea of this bullet…
Love the htc design…
Wonder if we could make it much like the ranch dog 460-350 w it’s metplat dia and loose the lube grooves. Prob would change the length of the bullet but I believe the metplat on the current one isn’t becoming of a good hunting bullet (haven’t gotten much feedback from 45-70 users).
Not a slam at all but I do believe w this design change it would make a good strong bullet capable of capturing complete confidence as a killer and its grooveless design should ensure a strong plain based bullet that alone can handle the ballpark of 40k psi even without gascheck.
Only issue I see is bullet length becoming too short when the grooves disappear but maybe keep it close to the ranchdog for all purposes but please as a start don’t change anything about the nose ahead of the crimp groove. I feel the best part of this htc design would be the features ahead of the crimp groove in keeping of the 460-350 ranch dog

The few grains of weight gained by losing the lube grooves would probably be negligible. The 460-350 ranch dog is the most accurate bullet in my 45-70, it’s the best compromise between weight and speed in my opinion.
My marlin 1895 guide gun has a tight bore, right around .457″ and the bullets are dropping from the mold .461″+. Even more sizing would be necessary with a HTC mold. Just something else to think about.

After powder coating and sizing most the Ranch Dog bullets (like .44 and .45 versions) you end with what looks closer to a full wadcutter. You end up sizing almost half way up the nose. Been there, done that. Might as well just use the original tumble lube design for that.
If you want a hunting bullet with some metplat, make a slick sided version of the Accurate 46-350V or VG.
