Participant::I got the mould going and cast up some just to see how it casts. The initial ones weren’t bad but usually they get better after a sesson or two. I am not in a hurry to load and shoot them, I will let others do that as I have lots of other projects in the fire.
With my soft lead (indoor range JHP .40’s only) the solid weighed 609 grs. and the large HP weighed 570 grs.

Participant::Just got through sending the absolute minimum down range, it’s too damn hot and humid. Ammo and rifle were in the car all day, extremely hot to the touch before shooting, at least 100 degrees.
10.5″ barrel.
2.13″ OAL
A1680 – 20 gr – 913 fps
A1680 – 21 gr – 957 fps
IMR 4198 – 21 gr – 1006 fpsThanks for the reply. Just casted some more tonight. What bullet did you use? Flat nose pin? So 21 grains brings it right at 1000 with 4198. Great 8nfo thank you.

Totally understand the heat issue haha. After work a storm rolled through and dropped the temperature 15 degrees so I decided to do some casting. I’ve found the mould likes to be good and hot and it likes the lead to be about 800 degrees with a fast pour.

I have to address a few things with my mold, the two halves stick pretty hard when they’re mated fully. I have finning at the nose and no matter how much I inspect them for stuck lead and scrape the block faces I can see a sliver of light between the blocks and around the pins. I’ll examine it closer in a few days and see what I can come up with.

Just guessing but you may have a pin guide setting crooked. Also if they are to tight it could be causing your pin to not set flush creating that gap.

Participant::I have been doing some more tinkering with these, our hope of seating this bullet to the same OAL as the 354 grain bullet doesn’t seem possible. At 2.13″ I can get them in the case gauge and they will chamber in my rifle, but they are jamming hard into the rifling. I have attempted to put a thinner powder coat on them but no matter what the powder coating hits the rifling, I have yet to seat an uncoated bullet and see if it makes contact.
Using a split neck 458 case that had minimal tension I seated a bullet and by hand closed my BCG in my upper. When I removed it the OAL was around 2.07″ (varies depending on coating thickness). My Tromix case gauge is even shorter, needing about 2.064″ before it will plunk in freely.
Curious to see if anyone else has had a chance to play around with these and what your experience has been.

Participant::After some more investigating it seems the section of the bullet between the body and nose is casting over sized. It was drawn to.455″ to aid in a longer OAL but is measuring .457 in my bullets. I had issues with the mold blocks not closing all the way in the beginning which I have fixed now. I will have to cast some more and measure them to verify that might have been my problem.

Participant::Well I thought I had my mold blocks closing better than originally but I still get finning at the nose after a few pours. Scrape the lead off the mold face and the flat pins, pour again and it doesnt take but 2-3 pours before it happens again. On another note I fired a few more of them seated at 2.07″, have gotten two loads into the 925 fps range with some rounding on the primer edge still. Not sure how much more I can get out of it at this OAL before I need to back it off. On another note, I have lead on my ejected cases right at the mouth I assume to it not sealing the chamber. I don’t recall seeing this with the 500 grain but I will have to test some more to know. Going to try a few things such as no crimp to remove the bell since they plunk without it and continue to lengthen my OAL to see if this makes a difference even with the bullet engaging the rifling.

::I figure I’ll pick this thread back up again. I’ve been running pretty much the same load as above; 21.0 great IMR4198 @ 2.135 OAL. I’m also getting right around 1000 fps from a 12.5″ barrel.
However, I’m seeing some unburnt powder, and the case appears pretty well maxed out. I was thinking of trying a bit faster powder. I load 18.5gr of H110 with a 500gr Maker Buzzsaw (a solid copper bullet), and that works quite well. I’m thinking of trying around 16gr of H110 under the MOAB to see where that goes. Any thoughts?
