I would like a bullet heavier than 210gr for a Freedom Arms m97. I trial fit some NOE 411-251 WFN and they are too long. I LOVE the look of that bullet though. The .412-238 looks the same but is it short enough to fit?

I only have a few brass molds and no steel molds. Which is best/easiest to use well? I will probably go gc just because…I can always dial them down when wanted but dont want to hot rod a PB using WWs and worry about leading.

Am I on the right track with all my thinking?

I can’t recommend a specific mold, but I can tell you how to measure the maximum length for your cylinder.

Partially seat a bullet in a primer-free dummy case without crimping it.  Don’t seat it all the way; put it in your revolver and verify that it’s too long.  Then put it back in your press and slowly push it back, checking very frequently to see when it fits.  This will give you the maximum overall length that will fit through your cylinder.

You may be able to look at bullet diagrams, find the length of the bullet beyond the crimping groove, add that to the case length, and calculate whether it will fit your gun or not.

Also, 41 magnum is a good round to use gas checks.  You don’t have to for every loading, but it’s generally more accurate and less leading so why not?

Brass and steel is personal preference.  I am afraid of rust so I don’t use steel much, although my steel molds stay in the acceptable temperature range better than my aluminum ones, making casting generally easier.  I don’t have any brass molds.

I don’t even have a .41 Mag (yet)  but I have a LBT 250 gr. LFN mould that I got when I purchased a lot of LBT moulds from a private party, if you ever need some measurements. Because the NOE LFN didn’t work I assume you need to look for a WFN design like one of these two:

The first has less nose length (more bullet in case so less powder) than the second one so it depends on what you have room for.

Another way to measure your max length for a cylinder is to take it out of the gun and put in a fired case (unless a recessed cyl) and measure from the back of the case to the front of the cylinder.  That measurement will give you your theoretical max LOA (base of round out to where the tip of the bullet could be)  but you would need to minus some for a buffer. Take that length and minus the length of the case and you have the amount of bullet outside of the case you can have or bullet in front of the crimp groove. When you have that you can look at bullet drawings and see how far they protrude from the the case when crimped in the crimp groove.

The FA 97 cylinder is recessed. The .411-251 nose is .395″ and is abot 7/1000s too long so I would need a drawing of those other examples to know if the will fit or not
