This mould is for a factory Savage 111 in 9.3×62 with a 20″ barrel. The chamber cast showed a 0.368 throat about 0.38 long; the bore is 0.358 with a groove of 0.366. I had Buckshot on the CB forum make a Lyman 0.368 sizing die. I picked Al’s design because the bore-riding portion would reach the end of the throat and the driving band would be big enough to stabilize in the throat.
I use a bit more tin to get the nose up to .358 for a snug fit and all 5 cavities drop at 289 gr +/- 0.5 gr once the mould is running at 295 deg C and a little frost is showing. The driving bands fall out around .3705 and after sizing they end up at .3685
I started out with 18.6gr TrailBoss for some ‘plinking’ rounds averaging about 1315 fps with a 4″ pattern at 100yds. After reading the post about the 360-310-FN using slower-for-cartridge powder with good results I pulled out some Accurate 4350 and the last of my Accurate 3100. The loads I tested were with Wolf LR primers which are relatively mild and I had some unburned powder: QuickLoad predicted about 36k psi which is kinda low. Loading density was 96% ~ 102%The pictures show a 2″ Targ-dot for an aiming reference and I was surprised that all these 5-shot groups were less than 2″.
The 57.2gr of A4350 had soot all down the case but seemed to have good accuracy @ 1780 fps. 57.5gr averaged 1926 fps.
57.2 gr A3100 avg 1880 fps and 59.3 was about 1959 fps
I have some Winchester LRM primers which may help with unburned powder & velocity deviations. Definitely will need them for H414 next time.
