Looking at different styles of pellets, I’m curious how the waist affects ballistics and drag.
I have an old package of H&N Sniper pellets which have a long square waist and are the same design as JSB Hades.
Noe molds are, of course, the traditional tapered waist design but would a long square waist have improved anything?

While it does not completely answer your question in regard to pellet ballistics, typing in to Wikipedia a search on air gun pellets does tend touch on the subject…

One would have to compare the relative weights between the two types of pellets that you referenced…
most probably the square waist pellets will be lighter than the wasp shaped pellets.

Though the square waist pellets referenced also appear to have a much shorter skirt… the ballistic shape and weight per the Wikipedia article may also tend to answer your question.

It seems that JSB are going away from the parallel center section on all of their newer pellet designs, in fact they are marketing several “Redesigned” pellets where they have discontinued the ones with the cylindrical waist and replaced that with two tapers, meeting at a narrower waist…. While you might think that the larger diameter, cylindrical waist looks like it should have less drag, that does not appear to be the case, the redesigned ones have a BC that equals or exceeds the earlier ones….

Without exception, I have never found any of the cylindrical waist pellets to be as accurate as the wasp waisted versions, but of course that doesn’t mean that YOUR gun might not like them better…. Accuracy trumps everything else, so test as many kinds of pellets as you can, and let your gun tell you what it likes the best….
