Range report on 230 gr. 452 (small) hp

I loaded some of these small HP 230s which weigh out almost exactly 240 grs.  The alloy is three parts lead to one part Rotometal hardball. And lubed with Magma Engineering “blue” lube. I loaded these bullets into new Starline .45 auto cases with 5.0 gr of WW231 and federal lg pistol prime. The bullet was seated just past the crimp groove and taper crimped with a Dillon die to .469 diameter at the mouth. Just an informal test so far but in my tightened Colt Combat Gov’t Model with a Bar Sto barrel this load functioned just fine and was able to hold minute of soda a can out to about 35 yards. In closer it was no problem to pick off 2″ diameter clods every time out to about 25 yards. I just didn’t happen to have any further out. The recoil was about what you would expect of a hardball load or a hair lighter. Function was 100% with the 18 1/2 lb recoil spring.  Next is to load some in .45 Colt and see how it does in my SAA and Smith & Wesson 25-5.
