I’ve been enjoying the “short neck” .308 TL bullet, am eagerly watching the GB discussion for the similar 245 grain .35 Whelan bullet, and at Ranch Dog’s direction, am launching this thread to look into interest for a similar profile for a .375 bullet.
My personal interest is in a projectile optimized for the H&H, and a quick look at the case dimensions for the “BIG” .375’s (H&H Ackley, Weatherby, JRS, and RUM) shows that they are all about 2.5″ from case head to back of the neck and have a max COAL of at or just shy of 3.6″. This gives us roughly .35″ to .36″ of neck and 1.1″ of potential bullet length – given that we want to keep the gas check secured in the neck.
The “standard length” .375 Ruger has a neck of .305″ and a bullet length potential of 1.065.
That seems close enough to where one slug could work for all with some careful slide-ruling.
My thought is to go with maximum throw-weight with Ranch Dog’s profile (275 grains at a minimum and more if we can get it), with Al’s RG hollowpoint options to reduce weight if desired.
I don’t see much need for a plain-base option in this arena, but perhaps the .375 Win and .38-55 shooters will chime in.
Anyone want to play?
