If my memory serves me right I remember reading in a old Lyman reloading Manual not to size a bullet more than .2 or accuracy would be bad, have any of you found this out, I’m working on a wildcat and trying to use a mold that throws a bullet .5 over what I need, thanks, Irish.
You can size down bullets quiet a lot but there are some things you need to watch for firstly lube groove depth sizing down a lot can remove these as the grooves don’t get any deeper as the bullet gets narrower.
If I have to size down a lot then firstly I push it through a size die which is at cast diameter or a couple of thou under so as to fill the lube grooves with lube, this helps keep the grooves in shape as you size down and stops the lead smearing over the grooves, I will then size down to final diameter in steps of 2 thou at a time.
Not sure if this is helpful to you or not, but if I have to size down a couple sizes, I will take them down in steps with a couple different sizing dies. I will also apply some case sizing wax (like imperial sizing wax) to the bullet before sizing. Remember that some longer bullets may stretch significantly if sizing much.
