Participant::I would like to get a mold for .270Win and or 6.8 SPC I am thinking about 130Gr. with a point and gas check , I don’t see much out there in factory molds that would fit this bill for both rifles.
I like the lyman 280473 mold but it does not look to be available any more.
or is there some thing out there I have not looked at? -

This is the best I can do for a daul prpose bullet for the 6.8 Rem & the 270 WSM.I fitted the bullet so that the GC will be .030 below the neck/shoulder junction on both cases. The Hornady GC is .081 +/- .002 long so, it will still have .05 in the case neck.
Both rifle chambers have the same 1.5 deg leade but the 6.8 will travel .040 before connecting with it (freebore travel) in the 6.8 chamber. In the design, the bore riding portion will keep the 6.8 centered while making that transition.
For clearafication of the .040 travel, if you’ll look at the chamber dwg for the 6.8, you’ll see it has a .070 long freebore and the first band of my design will occupy .030 of that, when crimped in the case.
With the WSM, the .030 first band will put it .030 below the neck/shoulder junction.
I think that this is the best that can be done to get the bullet in the 6.8 mag and still work in the WSM.
If the long design is choosen, I’ll sell my SAECO and take one. I don’t have anything to shoot the short bullet.

The original Remington chambered 6.8 SPC has a .070″ long freebore. The 6.8 SPCII has a .105″ freebore, and the 6.8 ARP/DMR has a .095″ freebore. The most common being the SPCII chamber.
That being said, don’t worry about the freebore in the 6.8…worry about the magazine length. The 2.26″ magazine limit is what is going to be key to making this run. Even though some steel magazines (CPD and PRI) will allow you to load as long as 2.295″, the 2.26″ should be considered as a minimum.
I’m in for whatever group buy runs. I’ve got a .270 Win, .270 WSM, and 6.8. I’ve already got 16 different .278 moulds, but I’m a pretty die hard .277 guy.

Participant::Its been over 24 hours since anyone has voted on what direction we should go with our design. I don’t think one or two more people voting will significantly change the outcome. To me, it appears that the majority wants a design suitable for use in the 6.8 SPC.
Shall we continue the discussion about which of the three different proposed designs we want?

I only have a Ruger1 in 270, so length is less of an issue for me.
and IF I get another rifle, it will be a breakaction single shot….So put me down for one in the 156 Loverin column
what I notice is the trend to get heavy for caliber bullets, such as 230-250gr 30cals, and 290gr 35cals…. but we can’t seem to get a good design for a 175-180gr .270 bullet…. yet it is only a tad smaller than a 7mm bullet and there are a couple 175gr for it… but I can’t find much for heavier than that.
a 170-180gr .270 would sure get my ears ringing

::There are several advantages for those using it with the 270 Winchester.
1. Higher ballistic coefficient. .373 vs .253. Flatter trajectory and less wind drift, for the same velocity.
2. The driving bands, completely fill the case neck, with the GC still in the neck.
3. The driving bands are a little wider (.060/.050 vs .040) so, there is more bearing against the lands, that could help in higher velocitys.
4. Wider lube grooves for increased lube capacity, that would help for higher velocitys.
5. The 5th and 6th band (.276 – .274) fit the throat of the 270 Win. to help keep it centered, when fired.
6. Deeper penetration for hunting.
7. I would be interested in buying it

The Loverin is a very good design as shown by frnkeore. So is the original one by Swede Nelson. The Loverin will be the better of the two designs as shown in frnkeore’s post for higher velocity accuracy. The key to success at higher velocity with this design will be;

This is the one I would like for a .270 Winchester.
For the 6.8 SPC I still would go with the Loverin 280-126-FN with the scraper groove deleted and the nose set back against the front drive band (to fit magazine length oal with GC at base of case neck). It should them be closer to 120 gr in weight. The Loverin design will prove to be accurate at a higher velocity than a bore riding nose design.
