I have been trying to get one of Ed Harris’ .312″ 160 gr moulds like he originally designed for NEI, and that was later done by Lee, but without the changes Lee made to it. Jarod Todd at Heavy Metal Molds (HM2) did a run of about 60 of the original Harris design molds back in 2013, but apparently is no longer making these.

These molds were designed specifically for the 7.62x39mm CIP cartridge with its short .239″ case neck length, but also worked well in a number of other 30 caliber cartridges like the .308 Win and 30-06. This was one of the few designs made specifically for the 7.62×39 rifles, such as the CZ 527, SKS, AK, etc. To see more about the specifics of the design, go to: http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?206520-HM2-30-31-cal-160gr-6-CAV-Ed-Harris-Design

I started an Interest Thread on the CastBoolit Forum early last summer to do a rerun of this mould. Its picking up some interest now. To see that thread, go to: http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?243393-Rerun-of-HM2-312-quot-160-gr-Ed-Harris-designed-mould

I started another Interest Thread on the CBA Forum at the same time. To see that thread, go to: http://www.castbulletassoc.org/forum/view_topic.php?id=10762&forum_id=105

Since this was an Ed Harris design, I contacted Ed asking his permission to do another run of this mould. Ed gave his approval.

These moulds could probably be made in other diameters, such as .310″, .316″, and .325″ like they were the last time so they could be used in anything from the 300 Blackout to the various 8mm’s. Is anyone else interested in getting one of these moulds.

      Dave

I’m ambivalent about the crimp groove myself, never use it but it won’t hurt if its there.

Actually it will hurt if it is there. One it leaves a place that can cause an imperfection and affect the stability of the bullet. Also if it is not there, it will help to strengthen the design on the bullet. The more the bearing surface, the more stability the bullet will have.

I’m not arguing with the theory of what you’ve said but in practice for my applications these things will have no noticeable effect on the target.

I have “blessed” the above drawing.

Any changes which Al has made from the HM2 or earlier NEI designs are subtle enough not to make an important difference, only in the shape of the GC heel and dimensioning of lube groove.  The important feature is having the correct nose diameter and taper, which is what makes this bullet “work”.

For those who gripe about the crimp groove, I wonder how many of you have actually tested with and without in a benchrest quality rifle.

To me this comes under the category of mental masturbation unless you would like to show me photographs of five or more consecutive ten-shot groups fired at 200 yards from a CBA Heavy Bench class rifle or something similar.  For benchrest competition I will agree with you, but for the average Joe using the bullets for recreational purposes, unless your rifle and load will consistently shoot ten-shot groups under 2-1/2″ at 200 yards, on demand with witnesses, don’t waste the band width.  I won’t believe you.

If loading for the Garand or ANY semi-auto rifle, it needs to be there.  It doesn’t hurt anywhere else, and gives you a chance to put some more lube on the bullet, just fill the crimp groove too!

I don’t use the crimp groove, even with my 32 H&R mag pistol (but its a single shot:)), so if you remove it, thats your choice. I would say go without the crimp groove, give us another boolit to play with.  A side by side comparison would be interesting, if there is any difference.

Please put me down for a 5-cavity GC mold of the ‘blessed’ design (aka ‘with crimp groove’.)

Touche, Mr. Harris… but somehow I don’t think the category ‘newbie’ fits you. :D

I would be in for a 5 cavity aluminum if the boolits will drop at least .313″. The barrel on my NOS Norinco SKS is just a touch over .313″ and the Hi-Tek coating will make up the difference.
Without it dropping .313″ I am not interested.

Al requested that anyone who wanted to have a bullet mold without the crimp groove to continue the discussion in a separate thread, so that we could determine the interest in doing a rerun of the original Ed Harris design. To honor that request, I started a new thread to continue that discussion of a design without the crimp groove. To see the new thread, go to: http://noebulletmolds.com/smf/index.php/topic,501.0.html

                                Thanks,

Ed, I know you have been doing this for many years. You have a lot of knowledge. But don’t belittle people. Your words could have been chosen a little bit better. There are many people that are coming over to this forum to get away from the exact things you are saying in your last post.

I wonder if this would be a good bullet for a 2-groove 30-06 Enfield?
