Participant::There aren’t a lot of really good heavy weight 9mm bullet designs available out there. Just to stimulate some discussion, I thought I would post a link to the Lyman web-site which shows their #356637, 147gr FP/140gr HP design. It has a very long, boat-tail-like bevel base. Lyman claims it is very accurate, and is a good choice for competition, e.g. IDPA, IPSC, etc., as well as for defensive use. Are there any design aspects of this bullet that you would like to incorporate in our design?

Participant::The long bevel base is most likely going to be needed for seating properly in the case. This is where I wish I had the design software that shows cutaways of the bullet in the case.
I wish I did too! That would surely help coming up with a workable design.
I thought I’d throw out some other 9mm/38 Super designs that could be useful for the basis of a new design. I’m not advocating any of these in particular, but just to show what some other designs look like. The following is a link to the Redding-SAECO web-site to show what SAECO offers. You’ll have to click on the second set of “charts” on the top center of the linked page, and then click on “maximize” toward the bottom of that chart to enlarge the drawings to see the details. Sorry for the inconvenience, but it’s the best link I could come up with. Go to: http://www.redding-reloading.com/online-catalog/88-bullet-moulds-charts
Some of the ones listed are:
9mm/38 Super #928 145gr RN-BB
9mm/38 Super #929 145gr SWC-BB
9mm/38 Super #910 150gr RN-PB
9mm/38 Super #930 154gr SWC-BBI think the SAECO #928 145gr RN-BB looks a lot like the Lyman #356637 in my previous post. I think I would like the SAECO #928 better if it had a flat point like the Lyman rather than a round nose.
I think I would also like the SAECO #910 150gr RN-PB better too if it had a flat point rather than a round nose too.
What do you think about these?

I’d like to see it in a HP and keep the bevel base more along the lines of RSBS#82077.

Participant::I was asked to draw a bullet that would work in this application so, hear it goes.
It’s 150 gr in WW/2%. I choise that because I though it might be more in line with range scrap weight. I made it 150 gr to allow for weight reduction of the HP.
It has a front band of 2 degree, that matches the 9mm throat.
One deep grease groove and a bevel base.
Al could work the BB as he would a GC to take it off and make a straight band, I think.
When used with the SIG, it will have a lot of the base, hanging in the case, because the sig only has a .170 long neck.
It will work well, as is for the 38 Super.
I can shorten up the base and reduce the size of the grease groove, if length of the base reduces case capacity more than you think it should.

Frank,
Thank you very much for taking the time and effort to do the drawing for us. It’s great to have someone who shoots in competition, and is a professional bullet designer to give us a hand on this design. I think your design looks great.
The only things I think I would like to see changed would be to increase the diameter from .356″ to .358″, and to eliminate the crimp groove. That’s just me though.
What do the rest of you think about this design?
Thanks,
Dave

Participant::Dave remember we aren’t all using to same alloy @ .358 on both bands aren’t we going to have a little case bulging? and what is the Max.OAL is this design going to give us. I guess it depends on what one plans to use this bullet for, most heavy 9mm tumble in the short range of about 25 yards I can’t tell you how many keyholes I’ve shot with the 9mm I’ve hit pins @10 yards and had them just sit their too. again what’s the main reason for this bullet I’m wanting a good stopper my wife carries a 9mm now so I’m in search of the best stopper I can arm her with.
I’m a fan of the bevel base, yep harder to pour but I’ve had better luck with them on paper. less keyholes and much tighter groupsJust remember the old say you can’t please everybody so you got to please yourself….
I’m still on broad for this heaver 9mm. mold

::I don’t dislike Franks last two designs. They are not to far off from the Accurate 35-147S bullet I use in .357sig. One thing though with similar designs is they fill the throat out a lot which may be problematic in 9mm. I did draw up an HP version of the 35-147S and tweaked it a little so it would not be so tight in the throat and would size better. I could post it is there is interest.
IMO I think it would best to stick with a design based off the 147gr XTP. We know it works in jacketed form and how it fits a 9×19, .357sig and etc already so I think it would probably be easier to tweak that design to suit a cast boolit based of it. Also I would not object to maybe a PB 147gr solid and HP version of the Ranch Dog 9mm design either. My $.02.
