I have a new Ruger American Compact 308 on the way and was thinking about getting this custom made.  Since NOE makes my favorite molds I thought I post and see if there’s anyone else interested.

I also haven’t done (designed) many rifle bullets, but have custom ordered a couple of dozen handguns bullets, so I’m bit new at rifle bullet design.  Once the Ruger is here this may need to tweak around.

Thinking of a big base, something that would allow a wide range of alloys, powders and pressures to work, in the 1,200 to 1,600 FPS range.  That may be wishful thinking, but I figure if 1,600 shoots in my 357 Henry, plain and base and no leading, the 308 should be able to do that too.  It would be a plinker, target to 200 yards and small game bullet.

Below is the design so far, it’s inspired by a couple of RCBS bullets (love the TMT design software):

      Good idea, bad idea?

I like it and am thinking it might be just about right for my super lightweight heavy gun.

I would buy one, but I’m a sucker for .30 caliber NOE Moulds.

Awesome, we are getting some good feedback.  Considering this site is brand new its pretty impressive.

Al – this design should work both a plain base, gas check version.  Thanks for the tips on how to make that happen.
Could it be a hollowpoint too?

            357shooter

Could do a single pin Lyman type HP
Need a meplate of .20 to do a RG, could shorten the nose and get it.

Thanks Al.  I think the current design is pretty good, but would like to here there’s any enough interest to get this started.

                357shooter:

                That’s it! Perfect!

I prefer a .100″ meplate and the 1.000″ length  to get the  170 grns or as close as possible. Or, I don’t think that  it would make any difference if the OAL was extended a couple three .100’s” or whatever to accommodate the HP version. Don’t know any thing about the Machining process. But I could live with a  .200″ if that’s what it would take to get this mold in production.

357Shooter I just got rid of my RCBS 311-165-SIL and wished I had not of now!
This will make up for it for sure… I’M all in in!

Thanks Richinsd and fla9-40.  The interest is good, especially since the site is just days old.  I’m sure NOE is noticing.

This should give you a idea of what we
can do in a RG2 or RG4 HP
Could make three pins FN, HP and cup point

The more I think about it the more I’m like the one on the left.

I think it could be a plain base still, is that right Al?

Al – are you saying that he mold on the right is the same as the mold on the left, just hollow pointed?

Also, after sleeping on it, I want a 5 cavity GC and a 5 cavity plain base.

Yeah, I know you can shoot without the gas check installed.  However I’ve developed a real personal preference for pain base bullets, but have the need for speed at times too.

Yes – we could do both, a RG mould for a shorter, bigger meplate bullet as shown and the one on the left PB or GC
Could mix PB and GC in 2 cavity and 4 cavity blocks, 2 cavity blocks with 1 each and 4 cavity blocks with 2 each

                                I hope this helps
