Participant::I do not own a specific mold for just powder coating yet. They sure do look awesome, and from what I’ve read are functioning just as good.
I have a 502-700 grain mold for my 500 magnum and wondered if there was enough interest in a real long heavy maxed out bullet with the option of a super deep hollow point. Crimp groove only plain base. Possibly even with a single cavity brass option.
More of a novelty for bowling pin night but just something different I thought could be a fun one.
What do you ladies and gentlemen think? -

Participant::If it helps, I could measure the overall length of the bullet mine casts currently. Where the crimp groove would go I think would be important in consideration with the enormous hollow point cavity. I’m hoping someone with greater skills than I can draw it up. Not sure the ending weight but considerably lower than a 700 grainer. Maybe like an ending weight around 500 grains or less with wheel weights mold diameter set up.

Participant::I measured from the base to the bottom of the crimp groove. It’s was right about 0.630 I think. All of mine are powdercoated and different colors so the overall length was not exact due to the different mil thickness. However the average was right at 1.370. They fit just fine in the 500 magnum. It’s really long, and fills the cylinder up near full.
Also, on a side note. I got the mallet fever from your video a while back. Ordered one and it came today. You were so right and worth the wait. No more drift wood or oak sticks for me. They are super nice.2017-04-07 at 18:25 #507492

Heh, see! I wasn’t lying about those mould mallets–they are surprisingly awesome! Like a super simple design, but very durable and work well. It is kind of hard to explain the snap the PVC shell gives to the mallet. It gives a nice snap to that sprue cutter.

I measured a few. I found the one I was using as an average also. It is coated in “mirror clear” so it’s not as thick as say the dark blue. It measured from the top of the crimp groove to the end of the nose was right about 0.700. As previously stated the base to the bottom of the crimp groove was 0.630. I have measured the crimp groove and I am having a hard time trying to get a real accurate reading. Sometimes I’m right at 0.040 then others closer to 0.050. The powder coating is making to more challenging but I hope that will help you.
I did a search recently and saw a manufacturer that sells a similar hollow point bullet in a crazy 435 grain and a 635 grain version. I believe those are gas checked and for sure have the traditional lube grooves.
Wondered if the option on a 2 cavity brass could include both style pins? As an example the 630 ish grain version and another mega cavity 450 ish grain exploder. Same mold just 2 separate weights in each slot. Plain base.Back to the awesome NOE mallet. It completely solved an issue I was having with a sticky hollow point 30 cal mold. Something about the pvc end, drops them way easier. Great recommendation. Really great product.

Participant::The thought of this mold is just crazy to start with but yes, makes me grin still. I already get a kick out of shooting a few of the 700 grainers here and there. It’s an experience,lol. Not for the tame but like anything, proper technique and desire can make for a fun day at the range. I have not pushed them passed 1150 fps. Still playing around with the load. I do powder coat them all and they so far out to 50 yards, devastating.
Due to the size of the cavity for this mold, I was hoping for some brass options. Either a single brass RG style with pins for each hollow point or a brass RG2 with the pin sets to make one of each at a time would be something I’d be in for. I hope others want to try this out and get it considered for a run.
I did have a question, I’m not a designer but any means but is the limit of the hollow point, only to the crimp groove area? Or can it be continued even further to try to reach somewhere in the 500 grain range?
I hope I’m not being a pain in the rear, but was just curious. So far, I’m in, just wondering about a possible “extreme ” hollow point also.

Full.Lead.TacoKeymaster::I wonder if the bullet would hold up if the hp went beyond the crimp groove. I wonder if some of the more experienced bullet designers would know. I wonder if it would need to use the larger mold blocks, like what the BMG bullets and long 45-70 bullets use. The other thing we could do, is maybe have an additional set of hp pins that go even deeper–so like 1 set of flat points, 1 set of regular depth hp, 1 set of the deep ones like in my drawing, and 1 set of super deep ones. It might cost a bit more to do that, but if there were enough people signed up, I think Al would still run it. So even if the super deep hp pins don’t end up working, we can still use the other ones. I will see if Al can look at this thread and give his input.

Participant::Sounds more than fair. I also do not know how the super extreme deep hole would go. Part of me goes with the idea it would stay together until impact then explode like a shotgun but then again, it could break apart right out of the barrel. The other details sound promising. Al said that he could probably make it for us, but with a disclaimer that it isn’t his design and he can’t guarantee it will shoot good with the crazy deep hollow points. I still want to do it though. Anyways here are the 4 pin options:




I just noticed I saved them as BMP files, I will change them to JPG’s so they load faster when I get a few min.

Participant::I think it’s worth a try for sure. I’m in definitely, and understand the disclaimer. We just need a few other 500 shooters interested in trying the experiment. I also have a blank pin set I ordered a while back from the swc hp set, I was thinking of cutting to length and trying that if it was not possible.
I’m more curious now on how it would react on target but at the same time being as safe as possible.

Participant::The other thing we should check is the nose diameter at the bore riding area. I am wondering if we should make it slightly larger in diameter or leave it be.
Tomorrow morning i will take some measurements and let you know what I find. From what I remember off hand the front section was fairly straight once passed the drive band. I will double check, measure and report back what I gather.
