      Hey folks,

I am wanting a new .45 Colt mold, for a Ruger Blackhawk. Let me share my idea and see if there’s any interest:

-This mold would be a WFN-type alternative to the various 270 SAA type molds
-I’d like it to weigh between 280 and 310 grains as a flat nose, with hollowpoints weighing from 270 to 290 grains depending on pin size, etc.
-I’d prefer a PB mold but know that others would like a GC for use at higher velocities.
-I’d prefer a .425″ nose, but would be agreeable to as short as .400″ or as long as .450″. I want to fill my (blackhawk) cylinder, but not so far that there’s -0- room for error if a bullet jumps crimp.
-I’d prefer a meplat in the .32 to .33″ range.

There’s a somewhat suitable alternative to this bullet available in the RD 454-290 design that NOE is running now, but the nose is very short; while the short nose makes it easier to get to mid-range velocities, it does limit the maximum velocity one can get due to the restricted case capacity.

The bullet I’m describing above would be very similar to the existing 265-grain .45 bullet that NOE is running, but slightly longer and slightly heavier. I believe this extra length/weight is a good idea to ensure full penetration through a deer-sized critter, especially with the larger hollowpoints.

Does anyone else have any interest in what I’m describing?

.454 at 300gr solid with HP at 285-290 would work for me.

I’m signed up for another buy that will substitute for this one, but am still interested in this, especially seeing how long it’s going to take to get it off the ground.

I’d prefer a slightly lighter HP (275ish), to be honest, but if we had several folks show interest and agreed on a target weight, we could probably tweak our HP pin sizes.

After thinking about this a bit more, it might be more accurate to say that this would be considered a ‘LFN’ instead of a ‘WFN’ design. It will have a long nose with much less meplat than the true WFN designs. I think this will make a more accurate bullet, and with the HP, any loss in meplat will be more than offset by the expansion of a HP. Should be a giant-killer on anything up to elk.

“I’d prefer a slightly lighter HP (275ish),” I have a little different interest in this one but it may still fit with every one else . I want a hunting bullet for my .454 Cassull , I am looking to push it at the 1500FPS range to go 100yards plus. But at this speed leading could be a problem so I would need a gas check option . I would have to use an alloy softer than Lyman #2 some thing with a hardness of 12 to 14 Bhn maybe  COWW 100% to get the expansion at the far end of the range.

From what I understand, once a mold is to be made, whether it is PB or GC is a secondary matter. It might be possible for either PB or GC versions to be all considered the ‘same group buy’.

What nose length does your .454 allow? Or what length do you prefer? Would .410 to .430″ -ish work for you?

keeping in mind the .454 Cassull can easily handle a 400gr. bullet and the cylinder length is much longer than the .45LC . any thing you design for the .45LC of 250gr or heavier can work I am going to have a long jump from the case to the lands . my best results are with bullets from 250 to 270 gr. this gun does favor running pressure to the max . so I must be able to get the gas check on it to be able to us an alloy soft enough to expand, so if you come up with a 270gr. ish HP that drops from the mold .454 to .453 that will function will in the .45 LC with the GC option I will be in.
taking the 270gr. SSA putting a GC on the tail and make it an HP would be my start.

I am looking at switching over to this one , because it is not looking like this post is going to take off,
For my use with the .454 Cassull I can get away with about any thing over 250gr. to 275gr. or so and get good range out of it. as long as I can put a gas check on it’s tail, to get forgiveness for the soft lead to get it to expand when it hits.

If that bullet was ~10% heavier it would be great. As it is, I just think it’s a hair too light to ensure full penetration on a deer after HP expansion. I could be wrong.

Stretch the nose on that one out to .400″ or so, give it a .325″ meplat, and it would be pretty much perfect. Make it 285-290 as a solid and 270-275 as a HP.

I’m still interested. I might even buy two molds (or one of this plus one of something else) just to help get it off the ground. It’s either this, wait FOREVER for a MiHec mold that’s made of brass (I like AL), or pay the $$ for a custom mold and pay again to have it hollowpointed.

                          Any other interest?

But we could play with it some more.

Hmmm…..switch from GC to PB and it’ll pick up 4 grains. Trim the HP pin down a bit (in the .200″ to .250″ depth range….I think the HP pin on your 454-270-SAA clone is PERFECT) and you’ll pick up 5-6 more grains. That’s 270, and 270 would suit me fine. Figure that it’ll cast a few grains heavy anyway, and it’s close to perfect.

Add 5-10 grains in the rear to lengthen the shank a bit and it would be perfect, I think.

What would you say to something like one of the Ranch Dogs with the conventional lube grooves? Maybe in .453″

With the advent of Ben’s Liquid Lube, I’m coming to like that multiple skinny groove style – size if you need to, tumble lube if you don’t.
