Medium-heavy .45 Colt WFN hollowpoint interest?

Hey folks,

I am wanting a new .45 Colt mold, for a Ruger Blackhawk. Let me share my idea and see if there’s any interest:

-This mold would be a WFN-type alternative to the various 270 SAA type molds
-I’d like it to weigh between 280 and 310 grains as a flat nose, with hollowpoints weighing from 270 to 290 grains depending on pin size, etc.
-I’d prefer a PB mold but know that others would like a GC for use at higher velocities.
-I’d prefer a .425″ nose, but would be agreeable to as short as .400″ or as long as .450″. I want to fill my (blackhawk) cylinder, but not so far that there’s -0- room for error if a bullet jumps crimp.
-I’d prefer a meplat in the .32 to .33″ range.

There’s a somewhat suitable alternative to this bullet available in the RD 454-290 design that NOE is running now, but the nose is very short; while the short nose makes it easier to get to mid-range velocities, it does limit the maximum velocity one can get due to the restricted case capacity.

The bullet I’m describing above would be very similar to the existing 265-grain .45 bullet that NOE is running, but slightly longer and slightly heavier. I believe this extra length/weight is a good idea to ensure full penetration through a deer-sized critter, especially with the larger hollowpoints.

Does anyone else have any interest in what I’m describing?

What would you say to something like one of the Ranch Dogs with the conventional lube grooves? Maybe in .453″

With the advent of Ben’s Liquid Lube, I’m coming to like that multiple skinny groove style – size if you need to, tumble lube if you don’t.

The problem with the RD mold is that the nose is short, and that’s great for medium loads or even light loads, but limits you just a bit on hotter loads.

Swedes drawing in post above is exactly what I want. This will make a great bullet for the 45 colt. Let’s all get behind this and make it happen. 

If he made it plain based, the rest is just details, and I’d buy a 4-cav aluminim RG4 in a heartbeat.

I think this design shows a great deal of promise and hope to interest more casters. The weight can be adjusted with a larger or smaller HP pin or using a GC or PB style base. A different alloy could change a few grains…plus or minus. And Swede could make the design a little longer or shorter to make it fit the desired weight. We need to alert our casting friends online and locally who shoot 45 colt or 454 that this bullet is being discussed on this forum. It will make a great medium-heavy bullet that many shooters will use as a go to bullet for big game.

This mould has been on the back burner for awhile…lets turn up the heat!

I shoot this bullet out of my Marlin 45 colt, Ruger 45 colt and Ruger 454 Casull ….oh yeah and out of my 45-70s. It is a very versatile design.

If you could tweak this a little and get it up to 270-275 grains hollow pointed and gas checked, cast with 12 Bhn, and not reduce the size of the meplat,  I will be in for a two or four cavity brass mold drilled for probe, with a set of handles and Lyman/RCBS type nose punch.  I will commit.

Djones…that bullet might work but I am looking for a WFN and not a RF mould. I have a NOE 265 WFN  and want a mould just like it that drops at 280-285. I also have a 325 RF that drops at 343 and feel this is too heavy for a 45 colt. Have any idea what the 460 mold you have drops at? My guess is I could manipulate the alloy some to change the weight by using a lot of lino but that will change the BHN too. I have been thinking of getting a 454 and I know I could use a heavier bullet in it. The Chief Finance Officer has not given her approval yet. This mid-weight mould will have to do for now
