::I got my mould last Tuesday and immediately made some bullets to try last Wednesday. All moulds have their own characteristics, like rifles and women, and this one is no different. I am a dipper caster (dipper made from a soda syphon gas cylinder) that I have been using successfully for over 35 years. Took quite a while to get them going great, ended up using a partial pressure cast routine and have had wonderful results from my first NOE mould.
At the range used my Omark target 308, bullets cast 1:1 lino/lead plus a little 50/50 solder, sized 311, both grooves lubed with LBT Blue Soft. First group of 29gr AR2208 (Varget) put four into 11mm and the fifth made the group 17mm. 30gr and 31gr opened the groups up with three shots in each under 1 inch but flyers made both groups 2in.
Plenty of work to do.

Participant::I went out today to test some loads at a more target shooting velocity. I had a few cold bore fliers as well. I was shooting outside today at 34*. Today I was also just using a bipod and my hand for a rear rest on the stock. All shots were at 100 yards. If I waited more than 15 minutes for the barrel to cool off, I would get a first shot flier.
First set of loads were with 5744
21.1 grs
1800 fps avg
21.6 grs
1841 fps avg
22.1 grs
1878 fps avg
Then switched over to 2400 powder
18.1 grs
1735 fps avg
18.7 grs
17.67 fps avg
19.3 grs
1803 fps

Participant::Tommyboy, here’s some groups shot with aa4350 and the 30 hunter.
Savage 10fp with 22″ factory heavy barrel 1in10, 308w.
Alloy was 8 parts coww/ 1 part monotype, gator checks, sized .311 thru lee’s push thru, Tumble lubed then hand dipped in thinned LLA. The grooves on this bullet filled in good and I had no perceivable flyers from the lube or signs of leading.
These were shot at 115yds, 58 degs 5-10 mph wind, sunny day1st group 38.0 aa4350 w/.4 grs dacron, large kurnels of powder in the bore and concaved primers.
2cd group 40.0 grs aa4350 w/.3 grs dacron, powder was a dust w/primers beginning to flatten. This group was showing great promise until shot 7 where a very elusive creature (wife) stepped out on the range and distracted me, and at which time I gave her a tongue lashing and she put me in place. Shot 7and 8 dropped low and 9 went high and 10 went back in the group. Sent the wife away today (work) and will reshoot this charge.
3rd group 41.0 grs aa4350 without dacron, powder was a little larger and concaved primers, again. Shot 1 high left shot 2 low right then the group tightened until shot 6 and the remaining stayed in the group. Also, will reshoot this charge with dacron and pending the outcome step up to 42.0 grs.
Sorry, no velocities, chrony and lyman 4500 on the want list. Hope to have both up and running by spring.

Participant::Well, it finally slowed down raining enough that I was able to step out on the range again with the 30 hunter.Nothing really fantastic to report but just following up from the last report. I have come to the conclusion that aa4350 is to slow for my barrel lenght of 22″s, the muzzle report is excessive and I beleive if I was in a darker light that I would have been blinded by the flash. The 40.0 grs of aa4350 seems to be the savage 10’s sweet spot and any other shooting with it I would load 20 rounds to test. I had 1 called flyer, which happened to be the third shot, I had got kind of happy and threw out technique when I seen the first and second rounds going in 1 hole. This is the third powder that I’ve shot the 30 hunter with ( sr4759, imr4227) and sr4759 being the most accurate with 18-18.5 grains. With all the powders the 1thing that has been most notable about the 30 hunter is that it hits hard, reason I say this, is the 30 hunter out of about 10 other 30cal designs that I shoot that this is the only one that I see the dust fly and it rocks my bullet trap on every shot. It should live up to the name that Al gave it,30 Hunter.

I finally found some time to cast up a batch of boolits out of the NOE 311-188-FN Hunter mould. This mould cast like a dream once you get it up to temperature. Ended up casting up a pile of boolits…probably around 300-400.
I’ve had good luck in the past using a Lyman 311291 boolit with 33.0gr of Varget out of my old 1903A3. So, based on your previous post and my past experience, I loaded up 10 rounds at 32.0 gr. Varget and 10 rounds at 33.0 gr. Varget just to see how they grouped before some serious load development. Thought I would try these out of my well-worn 30-06 Ruger M77 tang safety with 4X scope located way back in the safe. Never tried boolits out of this old hunting rifle so spent some time Sunday cleaning any copper fouling out of the bore.
Both 10 round groups are at 100 yards. I did 5-shot strings, letting the factory sporter barrel cool before firing the second string. First 10-shot target measured at 2” excluding the high called flier. The second 10-shot target measured under 1 ½” with a nice round group. This is about what the rifle will do with jacketed bullets so I’m VERY pleased with how this boolit performed out of an old hunting rifle. Now, I just need to do some additional load tweeking and run these across the chrony for velocities. I’m really wanting to try these out of my two-groove 1903A3 Remington and work up a load for local vintage military rifle matches.
My load data:
Alloy is 3 to 1, COWW and linotype, water dropped
Weighed 185 grains with this alloy (.302/.312)
Boolit sized .310 with Gator checks
Lube is Carnuba Red
32.0 gr. and 33.0 gr. Varget

I’m really pleased with how this boolit performed with the initial test loads out of a basic old hunting rifle. Thanks to Al, Tomme , yourself, and all the folks who provided input to improve the initial design…looks like it’s a winner!
This initial test load of 33.0 gr Varget should be in the 1900-2000 fps range based on similar loads across the chrony. I did forget to mention I used a little Dacron filler on top of the Varget charges. I’ll begin working around this start load to see if I can improve accuracy and velocity. My only concern is it had almost no lube star on muzzle with the Carnuba Red. When I cleaned the barrel with a couple of wet patches of Hoppes, there was no appreciable leading but some minimal streaking in the last couple inches near the muzzle. So, like Tomme Boy mentioned, I think I need to do a little more experimenting with a different lube. I’ve noticed a number of post suggesting LARS 2700+ for higher velocities and I have a stick laying on my bench ready to use. So I may remove the Carnuba lube off a few boolits and try a little of the 2700+ in the next batch of testing. Also need to start working up some 1903A3 loads for upcoming military match season. I expect it’ll hold the 10 ring based on these loads.SAJTU
