Would anyone be interested in a group buy lead ingot mold made from aluminum and have the NOE logo on each cavity?

If so, how many cavities and what weight should they be?

I have some of these from a previous GB not the one linked I don’t think.

I find them a pig to use as with sides being almost parrallel getting the ingots to drop is a real pain.

Where the handle threads into the mould is also a weak point.

If they were made with more slope to the sides and lip rather than the handle so as to be able to use vice grips to handle them, like the RCBS ingot moulds, then I would be interested.

As it stands I find the current design wanting.

I spoke with Al about this on the phone a couple of weeks ago and he is looking at what it would take to produce a quality product.

It may not be a good project due to some of the weaknesses pointed out by “domia” in the previous post.

Too bad the ingots just couldn’t be in the shape of a big conical boolits weighing a pound each. I know that is silly but wishful thinking.

I like the idea even though I recently purchased additional Lyman ingot moulds in anticipation of my next smelting session.

They have to have a draft angle and that would be no problem to do. You can buy end mills that have a angle on them to make the proper draft.

I wouldn’t use a handle, either. I’ve gotten by many years using my Lyman’s using just pliers.

I guess I’m the odd man – I’d rather have permanent handles than worry about the vise grips being firmly attached to the mold filed with molten metal.

I’d like to see a MUCH smaller logo in order to make room for more prick mark or other hand stamp options.  Such as:

PB, WW, LINO, SHOT, SOLD., RANGE,

%SN

10, 16, 20, 25, 30, 40 (as in 20-1, etc…)

BHN  AC, BHN WC

Basically, I would want the NOE logo or website link there as an indicator to where I could buy more of these cool ingot molds that are REALLY helpful to identifying my stuff.  A logo for logo’s sake doesn’t do much for me.

I like handles too, but only if they are fit for purpose. The originals weren’t very strong in the first place and were further weakened by the threading to screw into the mould so they had a habit of letting go at the wrong time. In comparison to that vice grips are a lot safer.

What about making them so you could use a set of LEE mold handles? We all have a set or two of them laying around

You can fit a regular pair of pliers in the center or attach our handles to it.  It will give you exactly 1 pound ingots with wheel weights…

Wow!!! I just bought my first NOE mould handles since I am now the proud owner of 2 NOE moulds. I really like this design.

Looks just tickety boo for me I’m in for a few.

I’m happy with only the NOE logo, as I just use a permanent marker to mark my ingots, I like to keep things simple at my age.

Al,

I like design and that the ingot would work with the NOE mold handles too. I don’t really need any place them to mark what they are. Like Dromia, I mark the back sides with a marker for what they are.

With my muffin pan ingots, I don’t use vice-grips when I empty them out. I simply wear leather work gloves and flip them over by hand once the alloy solidifies. I flip them over fast enough that I don’t even feel the heat, even when my gloves are wet from perspiration. I think it would be good to have a lip or rim around the top of the ingot molds so handles wouldn’t even be necessary unless you wanted to use them, like with my muffingots.

If they could be had cheaper to leave them un-marked that would be great. Otherwise, mark the NOE Moulds.

Just a thought on dimensions:  the conclusion I have been coming to for ingot storage is that the U.S. 7.62 caliber ammo can is the ideal solution.  A .50 cal can full of lead is pretty much immoveable, and when you fill it so that you CAN move it, you have a lot of empty airspace.  The smaller can can be filled and moved with far less chance of rupturing your spleen.  My two cents would be to make these to work with the internal width of a 7.62 can.

Re use of the Lee mold handles:  I like it, with one caveat – can the sockets on the mold be angled to work with the handles in such a way that the mold could be grabbed, moved, and flipped out without needing to pin the ingot mold to the handles?  Basically, as long as you’re squeezing the handles together, you’ve got a solid grip on the mold.  My thought is to have enough of these to fully empty the contents of a 25# scrap smelting pot in one go, and being able to quickly migrate one set of handles around all of them would be a great asset.
