Based on the initial discussion in the thread below, I am looking for interested parties to fill the list for a NOE buy if possible.

      100gn.
      Plainbase.
No lube groove for powder coating.
RN/spitzer type for feeding in semiautomatic.
Specs outlined, but not finished (true cast bullet drawing and .223/Wylde chamber consideration appreciated).

This is a jacketed 100gn that I extrapolated some rough measurements from:

I trimmed them .o1 under minimum length and sized them with a a sb rcbs die. I trimmed them short so next firing I can use an x die. Very slight flare with a lee flare die and bumped the flare back down  with a lee factory crimp die. The ammo loaded like that I made up with the 55 grain cast bullets functioned fine but I think the added pressure of a full power load runs the bolt a lot harder and it helps insure chambering. If you look at the loaded rounds compared to a jacketed load you can see the neck is swelled up bigger from that bigger bullet. Last night I clean that at good and oiled it. I get kind of lax with that job sometimes. Ill see if it helped. I know that load with the ball powder was very dirty. Even if a guy could get it to run it wouldn’t run long and bottom line is with subsonic and even when I went a grain past where they went supersonic (by ear, I didn’t set my chrono up) they didn’t eject. At a grain above the bras would get caught in the gun with the bolt half open. So I would guess another grain would have ejected. But that isn’t getting us anywhere

heres some testing. Didn’t set up the chrono as its to cold out! Just going by the sonic crack when supersonic.

852 no good. Any load that’s ejecting is supersonic by a good margin
4831 a bit better but still not close
          297 super before action ran
          1680 super before action ran
exterminator close with 9.1 subsonic but no action 9.7 ejection but super sonic
          2230  9.2 super no action
          4189 super no action
Two that did the best were 4895 and re25
4895 9.4 was subsonic no action
                  9.45 was supersonic no action
                  9.5 super action ran
re25 anything below 15.5 is subsonic 15 wont run the action 15.5 runs the action and ejects but does not have enough snort feeding to say it works reliably. It was the only powder that ran the action subsonic and ejected brass. Now the problem comes with filth. after a few rounds it stops even feeding out of the clip with the charging handle.
Maybe a mag primer would help but theres hope there
4895 is so close its scary but again even at 9.5 it ejected but with a clip in the gun with rounds in it the bolt just slowed down to much to allow a second round.

I also tried a few pistol powders faster the 297 including 110, 2400 hs6 and unique and results were even worth writing down. Now keep in mind that this is one gun. Your gun might not be as tight as this one. I used this one because its got a 1in7 twist and its probably the only gun I have that’s going to stabilize these bullets that slow. It is a tighter then average chambered AR though so keep that in mind. If I was going  to recommend where you should start id first try 15.5 grains of re25 or 9.4 grains of 4895 and start tweaking from there . id say to clean your gun first but part of this challenge, to me anyway, is that I would like to be able to go out and shoot a 100 of them reliabily anyway. If you cant do that what use is it. Now if you don’t mind racking the bolt to chamber a round the 15 grains of re25 would be a good load. as would about 9.3 grains of 4895. the 4895 was the cleanest load of all the rifle powders so that would be a definite advantage. the exterminator, 2230,852 and re25 loads were filthy. I’m about done with this unless someone else lucks into something that works. I do think with enough work it probably could be done but seriously doubt were going to find any load that allows a 100 to be shot before the guns to fouled to run reliably. I think its seriously time for one of those cheap 16 inch ruger americans. Only practical way I can see to use these would be to maybe carry a 5 shot clip of some loaded with like 8 grains of 4895 and figure out where they hit in relation to your sights. Light enough to not pick up a new round so that you wouldn’t get partially chambered rounds and run the bolt manually.

Wow! You put a lot of effort into this. Lots of good information.
I mentioned earlier I would probably try a pistol gas 16″ barrel at this point but I looked around and apparently they don’t exist. My new idea is to get carbine gas barrel, cut the pistol gas port then block the carbine gas port with a gas block on backwards or something. I guess that’d be after I pay my taxes though. . .

Thanks for all the testing Lloyd.  Now that I am back from my travels, I will see what I can find.  Lloyd did you happen to test with a suppressor?

had a suppressor on for every shot. Ive got a couple more powders I’m going to try today.

more testing today. I tried re17 and re19
17 got to 13 grains where it went super. at 12.9 it was sub and ejected but didn’t pick up a new round
19 got to 14 grains where it went super at 13.9 it was sub and ejected but didn’t pick up a new round
both very close and might be worth trying in your gun along with the 4895 load. Problem with all of the in filth. After I get to about 15 rounds I start having chambering problems and get some much crap in the trigger mechanism that I start having problems. This is probably going to end up being the deal breaker here. Lots of these loads would be fine in a bolt gun but if you are relying on your gun for anything serious there just to dirty and bottom line is at subsonic speeds if you didn’t find one that worked youd be right on the ragged edge of not being powerful enough to run reliably. I cant see any of these loads even if they would have worked being able to run a 30 round mag without some hiccups. that is at least in the gun I was shooting them in. What a guy could do is carry a clip loaded with them and figure out where they hit in relation to your normal load and running the action by hand. But then that’s not what I wanted. I would have to guess wed might be right on the area that that guy selling comerical ammo is at. What his advantage probably is is that he is using jacketed bullet that have more resistance and allow a tiny bit more pressure to build because of the increased friction of a copper jacketed bullet.

I haven’t yet. It’s a few projects down line  (a few more than that if you go by the wife’s accounting). I’m going to try a pistol gas set up. I can’t find a pistol gas barrel for 223 so my plan is to get a carbine gas barrel and cut a pistol gas port. Then I’ll run the gas under the handguard and put a solid block over the carbine port. Should be fun!

I have an inexpensive palmetto 7.5″ barreled upper with a 1/7 twist and pistol length gas on its way.  I figured for the price, might as well try it out.  $200 shipped!  If I can’t get it to cycle with with loading techniques, I will probably take a look at throwing an adjustable gas block on there and maybe opening up the gas port ever so slightly.  I have no need to shoot regular 55 gr loads through a short barrel, so I don’t mind turning it into a dedicated subsonic lead lobber upper.  Should be able to flip the plates on the dueling tree with those 100 gr bullets.

I guess I giving up. tried about every load variation I could come up with and it just isn’t happening. At least not in my 3 ars. Guess I will either sell the mold or pick up one of those threaded ruger americans and shoot them out of a bolt gun.

I have only had time to test one load thus far in one of my ARs. A 16″ 1-7 twist Spikes Spikes Tactical mid length AR. Load was 20gr Varget 2.260″ COAL .226″ Epoxy coated baked and water dropped. Action cycled great and locked th ebolt back on an empty mag. Accuracy was horrible though, didn’t hit the target at 50 with any of the 10. Rifle had open sights but I was hitting with all my other jacketed ammo I was using. I think the laod needs dialed down and velocity was too high. Will have to do a lot more testing when I get the chance. The 20gr of Varget was an educated guess for starting load.

Know kinda zombie thread/project, but in case anyone interested, 14.5″ pistol length gas, 1:8 though.  They also have one with a permanent pinned and welded brake for rifle legality.
