Meant to get to this sooner . . .
In another thread concerning 9mm bullets I mentioned the bullet under discussion might be good with the 350 Legend. Cornmastah then brought up that the legend has some special needs based on a rib in the magazines. tmaloy made a recommendation for a starting – the RCBS 147g 0.359 – where the first change would be the inclusion of a gas check.
I’m hoping cornmastah might draw up that prototype, if it looks good, using that fancy software he has. Actually, I have the same software I just haven’t had a chance to put the time in to really make a decent drawing.
So, let’s discuss and try to come up with the best bullet out there for the 350 Legend!

No need for a crimp groove though, right?  Since the cartridge headspaces of the case mouth.

Yup. That’ll be gone in the next cut.

Here’s pass three – this leaves 0.05 from max length.

As told in the link Eagle Eye posted, there are currently many variations on bore size. Notice the first band in from the nose is meant to act as a bore rider (the software just put that in, I’m not smart enough to think of that!). We may want to consider making that as large as possible so that fellas can nose size to their particular bore.

Cut the lube groves by a 1/3. It will still have plenty of lube with two of them. The larger bearing surface will help it trying to skid on entering the throat.

I drew up a design over at accurate. 36-180LG. I did this from the prints of the chamber and cartridge. Once I get a barrel and do a pound cast it may change a little.

I have not ordered it yet. I am still gathering parts for the upper.

Just something for everyone to look at. I am pretty sure I will be PC the bullets. Al can use this if he wants.

I went over to Accurate and got the URL for your design. Hope you don’t mind.
It is somewhat close to what we already have. Make the changes you suggested and it’s just about identical.
I’ll make the changes and see where ours comes out.

Modified this post so that the image is smaller and moved the image to my imageshack account.

One thing I noticed on your design, the top lube grove has a 2 diameter band. You will end up with a mess with the lube overflowing that way. You need to have both bands the same diameter. Unless you are PC them then it don’t matter.

If you look at the way I did it then you will understand why the placement of the 0.350″ is where it is.

I can’t get the tool to replicate the design in a “clean” way. I can get it there but then there are messy lines all over the place. Maybe we’ll just use your design. Looks good to me. The only thing I would have wanted to try is add in an extra 0.030 to the nose (and take 0.015 from each of the bands to make up for it) to get it out to 0.45 which would put the entire length of the cartridge to 2.26, max for the AR.

So, let’s go, fellow lead slingers, sign up now for a terrific bullet!

I’ll take a 5 cav, GC and a brass 4 cav, GC, RG4 if we’re going to make this a HP as well.

Lets see what Al says first. It needs to be drawn so it comes out at 0.357″ for the diameter. I am sure Al can do this.

But I am in for a 4 cav al gascheck

Now that I’ve taken a step back to compare these the one I put up has an extra lube groove. Personally I like lots of grease on my cast bullets, keeps the bore nice and shiny. So it’s ok by me.

Apologies for that last post, I was getting frustrated with the software.
Anyway, I think this is what we were after. . .
It seems to only come out to 168 with wheel weights. What alloy did you have in mind for the 180 bullet, tomme boy?

This is from Mike B. and was sent to Al:

It struck me as potentially interesting, so I thought that I would put in my $0.02 worth.

I hope that no one minds that I have made up a couple of comparison drawings using a couple of the  Accurate mold design drawings, and the latest drawing that was posted on the NOE website forum this afternoon.

I have also taken the SAAMI specifications for the 350 Legend and ran them through Quick Design to produce the 350 legend cartridge so that the cast bullet drawings could better illustrate what the final cartridge will look like and what the internal volume of the assembled cartridge will be with various cast bullets.

(In this case the Accurate dwgs, and the latest forum NOE dwg)

It also allowed me to start looking at what powders should potentially work as the Quick Design cartridge information is directly transferable to Quick Load.

The reason that I believe that the latest bullet design is coming out lighter than the 180 grain cast bullet weight as was originally contemplated should begin to become apparent when one looks at the latest change.

I.E. the longer and narrower nose and the shorter bearing surface groove dimension in regard to the latest change by making the nose longer and the grove bearing surface shorter.

Hopefully the attached comparison drawing should make that a bit more apparent also.

It might possibly be helpful to the two individuals who have been discussing this potential cast bullet design to post this intel on the forum.

Finally I have included the SAAMI specifications from that agency in regard to the 350 Legend.
