Participant::Meant to get to this sooner . . .
In another thread concerning 9mm bullets I mentioned the bullet under discussion might be good with the 350 Legend. Cornmastah then brought up that the legend has some special needs based on a rib in the magazines. tmaloy made a recommendation for a starting – the RCBS 147g 0.359 – where the first change would be the inclusion of a gas check.
I’m hoping cornmastah might draw up that prototype, if it looks good, using that fancy software he has. Actually, I have the same software I just haven’t had a chance to put the time in to really make a decent drawing.
So, let’s discuss and try to come up with the best bullet out there for the 350 Legend! -

::Nice! The 200gr FTX is 1 inch long without the poly tip. I think a bullet OAL of .990″ to fit mag length 2.260. Cannelure is about .485″ o give starts at .522″ approximately. I know many are thinking a lighter bullet but if its intended to cycle a AR the velocities you’ll reach will be about 2400+ FPS out of a 16″ AR. Pressures are up there so accuracy will be hard to find. Keeping this bullet around 2200 seems to be the ticket that’s why I think a 180 as the lightest. H110 charge will be around 23gr. CFE Black may be a good powder also

Participant::Just wanted to add this one change to the last set. Eagle Eye mentions a more tapered ogive than the 35XC so I lengthened the radius arc to 4 nose diameters on this one. This also knocks down the weight by 6gr.
If nothing else comes out of this thread at least I sure got a good lesson in how to use this fancy software!

Participant::Things seem to have frozen over a bit here. Just thought I’d break the ice by revealing some facts about my moniker to the younger fellas that read these forums.
Sgt. Alvin York was a legendary (if you’ll pardon the pun) hero of WWI. His greatest feat was capturing 134 German soldiers, single-handedly. Only slightly less well known was how he shot and killed, with his 1911 45 ACP, 5 German soldiers charging him with fixed bayonets. From a single 7 shot clip. Finally the Marvel character Captain America was, for the most part, based on Sgt. Alvin York.
So, now that everybody knows how old I am, let’s get those “I want”s pouring in!2019-10-28 at 14:55 #511907AlvinYork
Participant::Here’s another post from MikeB. He has an email from Starline concerning brass and bullet size. Interesting read.
MikeB.’s current rendition is at the bottom of this post. I like it.Thanks MikeB., please send your “I want” in your next transmission!

I would prefer to see the 350 Legend mold design go on a diet and go back to a slightly lighter cast bullet weight.
That should take the cast bullet weight back down to around 188 grains in cast bullet weight.
That will allow for a bit less seating depth being required to make the SAAMI cartridge OAL.
It will also tend to lower the shot pressure and allow for a bit more options in powder choice down the line.
On that note: The IMR – Winchester – Hodgdon Powder website currently lists the 350 Legend as one of its rifle cartridge choices, and notes some of the powder load data from each company that the powder manufacturers recommend that will work with that new cartridge design.
The only issue is that at the moment the heaviest bullet shown on that website is 180 grains.
To that end I have attached a modified drawing of Sgt York’s last design by removing one section of lube groves and bearing surface groves.
I have also in the interim have been in contact with one of the US major brand brass manufacturers that offers a 350 Legend cartridge case, and gotten that companies ballistic Guru’s reading on the .355 .357 bullet dimensional diameter question that seems to have been raised.
The text of his response to my query is also shown here in red italics.
The SAAMI bore and groove diameter for 9 mm and .357 diameter bullets are all the same, so any barrel designed for either bullet diameter should work, but all factory Winchester ammo uses a .355” diameter bullet and most SAAMI chambers don’t have enough clearance for .357” bullets with the Winchester brass.
(Our brass has about .0005” thinner case wall and will chamber with .357 bullets in many chambers). The spec for the bullet in the SAAMI print is .354”-.357”.
Winchester does advertise their ammo as using a .357” diameter bullet, when in fact they actually measure .355”.
We believe this is because many states have a .357” caliber minimum. Ultimately the bullet diameter that you can use will be dictated by how much clearance is in your chamber since any bore diameter within spec will work with a .355”-.357” bullet.
Most of the new bullets coming out (like the two new Hornady bullets) specifically for the .350 Legend are .355” diameter.

Full.Lead.TacoKeymaster::Is that last picture the finalized version? If so, I can ask Al to take a look at the design to make sure he is ok making it, and then get an official drawing up and group buy started.
Can’t believe we currently only have 4 orders and this topic has had over 72,000 views. Well, hopefully there will be more orders soon. This is an awesome, custom designed 350 Legend bullet and it’d be a shame for someone to miss out on this historic opportunity.
